The Observatory(气象台)

The Observatory, like a giant standing firmly there, has witnessed the vicissitudes of Tsinghua University through the rising and set of stars. Over the past few years, Tsinghua astrophysics has made great progress and ranked highly on a global-scale evaluation.

The Old Gate

This landmark is the famous Old Gate of the Tsinghua Garden, a three-arched white jade gate with a black brick base. First constructed in 1909, the Old Gate served as the main entrance to the then Tsinghua Xuetang (Tsing Hua Imperial College). The West Gate became the new front of Tsinghua. Thereafter, the earliest gate became known as “the Old Gate.” Over the course of time, the Old Gate has been a witness of Tsinghua University’s history and development full of ups and downs. Apart from being an iconic structure in the Tsinghua Garden, it symbolizes the diligence, realistic approach, calmness, and determination of all Tsinghua teachers and students.

Gu Yue Tang(古月堂)

Gu Yue Tang, built around the second year of the Daoguang reign in the Qing Dynasty, is one of the best samples for displaying the quintessence of traditional Chinese gardens. Scholars like Liang Qichao, Zhu Ziqing and Wang Guowei once resided in Gu Yue Tang. Today Gu Yue Tang accommodates administrative offices, but it still remains the most popular attraction at Tsinghua.

The West Gymnasium

Located on the side of the West Playground, The West Gymnasium is one of the four famous buildings in the early days. Being the cradle of the physical culture of Tsinghua University, the West Gymnasium is the gathering place for forerunners and elites of China’s sports sector, nurturing tens of thousands of domestic athletes. Time passed, the time-honored West Gymnasium is still in good shape. Like a weathered man, the Gymnasium stands guard over the history of physical culture of Tsinghua University. At the same time, like a vigorous, young man, the Gymnasium, in the company of all the students in their youth, embraces a new century and a new future.

Gong Zi Ting (工字厅)

Gong Zi Ting, the main building inside Tsinghua Garden, resembles the letter H (or the character gong) when seen from above. Since 1949, Gong Zi Ting has been the workplace for the university’s presidents and administrators. Together with the magnolia trees in the yard, the unadorned board has greeted university presidents, academic masters, and dignitaries from around the world. It is like the witness and narrator of many great stories here.

The Main Building

It is the Main Building. Its west, east, and middle parts are connected by four arcades. With a total floor area of over 76,000 m2, the huge building was second to none among all colleges in the 1960s. It was designed by hundreds of teachers and students from various departments as part of their graduation projects. It has seen the past days of vicissitudes, glory, dreams of Tsinghua teachers and students. It will also embrace another century of achievements.

The Auditorium

The Auditorium is located at the center of the campus. Nowadays, the Auditorium is mainly used for students’ cultural activities and entertainment, especially the Student Festival. It has held cherished memories, for those who have bloomed on this stage, who have participated in background work or even who just sat down and enjoyed the performance. The Auditorium records the history and spirit of Tsinghua, and also brings beautiful memories to every generation of Tsinghua students.

Tsinghua Xuetang

Of all the buildings constructed during the university’s early days, Tsinghua Xuetang was undoubtedly the first one, which is why it was known as No.1 Building back then. Throughout its long history, Tsinghua Xuetang has seen numerous passers-by. It is Tsinghua’s history in a nutshell. It guards the passionate youths of generations. It carries on the unique glamor and heritage, and sows the seeds of the future.
