90th Anniversary Development Forum for the Department of Precision Instrument Held

On the afternoon of April 23, 2022, the 90th Anniversary Development Forum of the Department of Precision Instrument was held in the reception hall of the main building. Xiang Botao, the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the university, attended the forum. The event was joined by over 80 participants including officials from relevant departments inside and outside of the university, guests, alumni, faculty, and student representatives of the Department of Precision Instrument, with nearly a thousand people watching the live broadcast online, all celebrating the 90th anniversary of the department. The forum was chaired by Bai Benfeng, the Secretary of the Party Committee of the Department of Precision Instrument.


In his speech, Xiang Botao fully affirmed the development achievements of the Department of Precision Instrument over the past 90 years and expressed his earnest hopes for its future development. He stated that standing at a new historical starting point, he hopes that all faculty members and students of the Department of Precision Instrument will seriously study and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech during his visit to the university, pursue the highest mission of serving the country, inherit and promote excellent traditions, seize the new opportunities in the development of the precision instrument industry in the new era, take initiative, improve the quality of talent cultivation and original innovation capabilities comprehensively, further serve and integrate into the new development pattern, and make new contributions to the innovative development of China's instrument and optics industry and to the university's acceleration into the ranks of world-class universities.


At the forum, the participants watched together the 90th-anniversary promotional film "Carving·Instruments" of the Department of Precision Instrument, which reviewed the department's 90-year journey of serving the country, striving forward, and continuously creating splendid achievements. As one of the oldest engineering departments in Tsinghua University with a development over 90 years and several departmental adjustments, the Department of Precision Instrument has always adhered to the original aspiration of targeting the international academic forefront and serving major national needs, striving for excellence, and forming the spirit of "seeking perfection and stopping only at the best," which has provided an inexhaustible driving force for generations of the department's members to fulfill the mission of the times.


During the guest speech segment, Zhou Zhicheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chief Engineer and General Designer and Commander of the Fifth Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology Group, and part-time professor of the Department of Precision Instrument, expressed his gratitude for the contributions made by the faculty and students of the Department of Precision Instrument to the country's space industry. He stated that the Department of Precision Instrument has always taken it as its own responsibility to cultivate talents needed for national and social development, and to serve major national needs, training a large number of high-quality talents and making outstanding contributions to national development and scientific and technological progress. Zhang Tong, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Instrument and Control Society, stated that the department's solid and splendid development history is a microcosm of China's scientific and technological independence and self-improvement. The 42 years of development of the China Instrument and Control Society is also closely related to the strong support of the Department of Precision Instrument. The society will, as always, consistently support the discipline construction of the department and hopes that the students of the department will continue to exert their strength in various fields, face the future together, and open a new chapter in the era of development for the Department of Precision Instrument.


Liu Qiang, the head of the Department of Precision Instrument, delivered a development report. Through the three chapters of "Glorious Years, Passing the Torch," "Forging Ahead, Unchanged Aspiration," and "Striving for Perfection, Planning the Future," he introduced the development of various affairs of the department. He stated that the department will continue to uphold the concept of "striving for perfection and stopping only at the best," lead with the "four orientations" to vigorously promote discipline construction, continuously improve the level of high-level talent cultivation and scientific research, build an instrument and optics discipline with Chinese characteristics and world-leading status, and strive to join the ranks of the world's top disciplines as soon as possible, making greater contributions to the nation.


During the special report session, four guests from different fields were invited to give presentations. Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, former Vice President of Tsinghua University, former head of the Department of Precision Instrument, and distinguished professor of the Department of Precision Instrument, You Zheng, delivered an academic report online. He discussed the development of intelligent microsystems technology, covering the five key elements of microelectronics, microphotonics, MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems), architecture, and algorithms. Combining industry-education integration, rational layout, and demonstration applications, he envisioned the important application prospects of intelligent microsystems technology in fields such as national defense, micro-spacecraft, intelligent transportation, and medical health. Gao Hongwei, the former Party Secretary, Chairman of the China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation Limited, and an alumnus of the 1976 class of the Department of Precision Instrument, made suggestions regarding the scientific research and academic development of the department after reviewing the 90-year development history and looking forward to the next 30 years. He expressed that a new epoch-making wave of theoretical and technological innovation is forming in the deepest trenches of the "science sea," and he hopes that the Department of Precision Instrument will pay more attention to artificial intelligence and space technology, environmental resources and energy technology in the development of its disciplines. He also emphasized the importance of building academic confidence, independence, seizing the high ground, and being open to error in academic environment construction. Li Guanhua, Party Secretary and Director of the Culture and Tourism Bureau of Fangshan District, Beijing, and an alumnus of the 2001 class, reflected on his time studying in the Department of Precision Instrument and shared his experiences of dedicating himself to grassroots service work after graduation, always internalizing and externalizing the spirit of precision instrumentation. Meng Xiangfeng, CEO of Beijing ZhiGe Technology Co., Ltd. and alumnus of the 2000 class, shared his experiences in innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as insights on the transformation of scientific research results and the deep integration of industry, education, and research.


At the conference, a donation ceremony for the Jin Guofan Young Scholars Scholarship Fund was held. Academician Jin Guofan, former dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering and former head of the Department of Precision Instrument, and Liu Qiang presented the donation certificate to the representative of Shenzhen Feixiang Technology Co., Ltd., Hou Zhen, an alumnus of the 1994 class of the Department of Precision Instrument.


At the end of the forum, Bai Benfeng expressed his gratitude to all the faculty, staff, alumni, and friends from all walks of life who have worked hard for the reform and development of the Department of Precision Instrument and who have long been concerned with and supported the construction of the department. He stated that, through the joint efforts of everyone, the Department of Precision Instrument will soon be built into a world-leading academic palace and the disciplines of instrumentation and optics will be developed into world-leading disciplines, making greater contributions to national development, social progress, and the innovative inheritance of human civilization.
