Successful Holding of the "Pursuit of Excellence" PhD Academic Forum of the Department of Precision Instruments and the 791st PhD Academic Forum of Tsinghua University

The "Pursuit of Excellence" PhD Academic Forum of the Department of Precision Instruments, alongside the 791st PhD Academic Forum of Tsinghua University, was successfully held from May 23rd to 25th. Yang Fenhui, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC Shunyi District Committee and Director of the District Science and Technology Commission; Liu Qiang, serving as the Department Chair of Precision Instruments; Zhang Gaofei, the Party Secretary; Tan Yidong, the Deputy Department Chair; Xiao Qirong, the Deputy Party Secretary; as well as doctoral supervisors and current PhD students from various research institutes within the Department of Precision Instruments, participated the forum.

The forum's theme centered on "Instrument Science and Optical Engineering", offering a rich and varied program. It featured 9 meticulously crafted invited keynote reports, 2 career counseling lectures, 59 oral presentations, and 57 poster presentations, all combining to create a veritable feast of knowledge and ideas. The forum also assembled an academic steering committee comprising 34 experts and scholars, drawing over 150 faculty members and students from esteemed institutions such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Beihang University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Chongqing University, Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

During the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman Yang Fenhui fondly reflected on the deep historical connections between Shunyi District and the Department of Precision Instruments, expressing high hopes for future collaboration across more areas and the mutual reaping of substantial outcomes. Party Secretary Zhang Gaofei urged the PhD students to value this precious opportunity for academic training, to polish their presentations to high standards, to exchange and stimulate cutting-edge ideas, enhance their academic caliber, and ignite innovative inspiration.

In the subsequent invited report session, a report titled "Ultra-Precision Environmental Control Technology for Atomic-Level Observation and Manufacturing" was presented by Professor Cui Junning, Dean of the School of Instrumentation Science and Engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology, offering an in-depth analysis of the latest advancements in the ultra-precision field. Professor Sun Hongbo from the Department of Precision Instruments at Tsinghua University shared his innovative explorations in the realm of optical engineering with a report titled "Harnessing Light to Pioneer New Frontiers of Civilization", thereby opening up new academic vistas for the participants.

Students engaged in spirited discussions across the two main areas of instrumentation and optics during the sub-forum sessions. The first instrumentation sub-forum featured a special invitation to Researcher Zhang Chi from the Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who delivered a report titled "Low-Quality Mechanical Energy Harvesting and Self-Powered Systems". The second instrumentation sub-forum invited Assistant Professor Chen Jianyu from the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences at Tsinghua University to present a report titled "Building Humanoid General-Purpose Intelligent Robots". The optics sub-forum was equally engaging, with Professor Zhu Tao from the School of Optoelectronic Engineering at Chongqing University presenting a special report titled "Narrow Linewidth Lasers and Development Trends"; Associate Professor Sun Jingbo from the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Tsinghua University delivering an academic report titled "Structural Light Generation and Modulation Based on Spherical Crystal Materials"; and Associate Professor Fu Bo from the School of Instrumentation Science and Optoelectronic Engineering at Beihang University sharing a cutting-edge report titled "Ultrafast Pulse Fiber Lasers and Applications Based on Micro-Nano Materials". At the international sub-forum, Assistant Professor Wu Yujie from the Department of Computing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University was specially invited to present an English academic report titled "Brain-Inspired Intelligence Inspired by Various Synaptic Learning Methods". At the frontier cross-sub-forum, Associate Professor Tang Jianshi from the School of Integrated Circuits at Tsinghua University was specially invited to present an academic report titled "Memristors and Brain-Inspired Computing: From Brain-Inspiration to Brain-Computer Interface".

Furthermore, Xun Yiheng, co-founder of Beijing Weina Starry Sky Technology Co., Ltd., and Hu Tianjian, Vice President of Human Resources at Hesai Technology, both alumni of the department, shared their extensive experiences in career counseling lectures, providing guidance for the students' career planning.

What is noteworthy is that the forum actively fostered a bridge for government-university-enterprise cooperation, collaborating with the Shunyi District Human Resources and Social Security Bureau to conduct the "Yi Tan Jiu Jing" Shunyi Technology Enterprise Visit activity of the Department of Precision Instruments, and hosting the "Yi Qi Wei Lai" Spring Job Fair and Internship Fair. Twenty-eight renowned companies in the industry brought 7915 job vacancies across fields such as intelligent instruments, optical engineering, and automatic control, attracting over 200 undergraduate, master's, and PhD students from Tsinghua University to actively apply, thereby creating excellent opportunities for the students' career development.

At the closing ceremony, Department Chair Liu Qiang delivered a comprehensive summary of the achievements of the forum, reviewed the fine tradition of the PhD Academic Forum of the Department of Precision Instruments, highly commended the successful holding of this forum, praised the students' rigorous academic attitude, and expressed the expectation for the forum to continuously innovate and break new ground, and to continue building a better academic exchange platform for teachers and students.
