Doctoral Tutor "Group Communication" Seminar Was Held in Department of Precision Instrument

On the afternoon of March 17, 2017, doctoral tutor "group communication" seminar was held in the Department of precision instrument. 20 people including Vice Dean of Graduate School, Professor Wei Zhang, Dean of our department, Professor Zheng Ouyang, Vice president of Sub-Committee on Instrument and Optic Degree Appraisal, Professor Lifeng Li, committee member, professor Rong Zhu, vice dean in charge of teaching, Qiaofeng Tan, group leader of graduate work Bo Wang and other doctoral tutors attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Qiaofeng Tan.

Qiaofeng Tan first introduced the overall situation of doctoral training program in Department of precision instruments, noticed on the doctoral training program, situations of anonymous review on doctoral dissertation over the years, the award situation in National 100 Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, as well as Excellent Doctoral Dissertations awarded by China Instrument and Control Society and Chinese Society for Optical Engineering in the year 2016 and 2017 in our department.

Professor Zhu Rong , based on her own doctoral training experience, described how to develop targeted doctoral training programs and when it was proper to do doctoral thesis proposal. She thought that it was important to listen to opinions of peer experts in the pre-defense and treat anonymous evaluation opinions seriously. She also said that it was true that “A strict teacher produces excellent students” but encouragement and praise were also indispensable to stimulate doctor’s master consciousness and creative enthusiasm, since it was such a crucial period for a PhD student. Tutors should made sure their students get integrated basic skills training and learn how to conduct independent research work as well as how to conduct themselves in society. Finally, Professor Zhu shared her summary of the relationship between teachers and students: mentoring, partners, friends and even family.

Professor Lifeng Li stressed the importance of paying attention to the copyright awareness in doctoral dissertation writing. When citing picture or chart in the previous work, doctors must get the authorization from the publisher or the original author. In summarizing the results of previous studies, we should deeply understand their work rather than simply listing results. In the text, doctors should point out which part of the work was completed by others or completed with the help of other people, such as device manufacturing, instead of shrinking these contents in the acknowledgment part. Moreover, doctoral thesis should be submitted to the most professional and competent teacher for review. In the evaluation process of doctoral dissertation, we should read carefully, think deeply and express our views objectively. Finally, Professor Li believed that it was an encouraging reform that young teachers can guide doctors so young doctoral tutor must seize the opportunity.

Professor Bo Wang introduced how to deal with psychological crisis of graduate students, pointing out that academic stress, mental illness, Internet addiction and other reasons would lead to graduate psychological crisis. Through real examples, he introduced the outward manifestation of students who had psychological crisis. Tutors should pay special attention to the mental state of their students. If such signs were found, tutors should inform schools for professional disposal.

In terms of how to make full use of school funding aimed for international communication and how to treat the short-term and long-term international exchange, how to establish the mechanism aimed at those who not suitable for the doctorate students to withdraw from the program, participants carried out heated exchanges and discussions.

Professor Wei Zhang concluded that doctoral guidance should aimed at paralleling with to the world's top universities. Tutors should make sure that students maintain the original impetus to pursue a doctorate. He especially emphasized the importance of the dissertation writing. Rules, rhythmical structure, standardized format should be considered. Dissertation submitted must match the reputation of Tsinghua University. He pointed out that the psychological problems of students is not terrible, some of which were normal psychological fluctuations. Instructors should be alert to their mental condition and guide students properly. Professor Zhang hoped that, in a new starting point, with new standards, we can develop world-class scholars. He believed that new doctoral tutors would be competent in guidance work, fulfill the duties of "a teacher".

Finally, Professor Zhang conferred certificates to each new PhD tutor who completed the seminar and participants took a group photo to mark the occasion.
