BCRC for Asia and the Pacific Participated the Meetings of the Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions

SOE Jun 15, 2015 Meetings of the Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions (BC COP-12, RC COP-7, SC COP-7) were held from 4 to 15 May 2015 in Geneva,Switzerland. More than 1200 participants from 171 parties, 10 international organizations and105 non-governmental organizations, etc. attended the meetings.

Prof. Hao Jiming from the School of Environment (SOE) and other 11 representatives attended this meeting on behalf of BCRC China. As members of the Chinese delegation, several representatives of SOE and BCRC China participated the Technical Negotiation of the Basel and Stockholm Conventions. Their trip funded by BCRC China, 6 GEP (Global Environment Program) undergraduates also joined the meeting as observers and took part in the meeting progress under the guidance of international advisory experts.

 

During the meetings, all the 14 Basel Convention Regional Centres and 16 Stockholm Convention Regional Centres were comprehensively assessed for the first time based on their work performance between the year 2013 and 2014. BCRC China and Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific(BCRC China/SCRCAP), which was established since 2007 in Tsinghua University, both got the full marks. BCRC China/SCRCAP is the only center with the functions of both conventions who got this highest score among all the centres. These precious achievement of BCRC China/SCRCAP were referred many times by EU and others during the negotiations on the item of regional centres.

On the Special Fair “From science to action” organized by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventionsduring the meetings, Prof. Li Jinhui, Executive Director of BCRC China, was invited to give a report entitled “From science to action - Promoting the Environmental Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste in Asia and the Pacific Region”. With the support of UNEP, the Cooperative Partnership on Regional Chemicals Management and Metal Recycling was successfully launched during the Side Event organized by BCRC China. Testified by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, BCRC China signed a Memorandum of Understanding with GEM CO.,LTD on the Cooperative Partnership of Metal Recycling in Asia and the Pacific Region. BCRC China also promoted its practices and achievements on the management of waste and chemicals by booth exhibitions, and won great acclaim. Moreover, representatives of BCRC China joined the Side Events of Network for Optimizing Regulatory Compliance on Illegal Traffic (ENFORCE), Partnership for Action on Computing Equipment (PACE), PCBs Elimination Network (PEN) andEnvironmental Sound Management Framework, and shared lots of information and experience.

The Meetings of the Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions are important platforms facilitating the synergetic progress of international chemicals and waste management. The participation of BCRC China and representative students of SOE will further promote the development of SOE in the field of waste and chemicals.
