Jiang Xiao Serves as Visiting Scholar at the School of Social Sciences

In September 2019, at the invitation of the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University, Jiang Xiao, Associate Professor of Denison University, served as a senior visiting scholar at the Institute of Economics. During the visit, Jiang Xiao will mainly teach undergraduate courses - Growth, Distribution and Instability and Conflict and Coordination Microeconomics - for the School. He will also take part in undergraduate professional foreign language courses in the summer vacation, presentation of academic research reports as well as the cultivation of postgraduate students majoring on political economics.

Profile

Jiang graduated from the New School for Social Research, and now teaches at the Denison University. In 2019, he became a tenured associate professor. Jiang’s main research fields are history of economic thought (mainly classical economics), international trade and development, economic models (input and output, used to calculate the general equilibrium) and economic policy.

Jiang masters state-of-the-art technical skills in modeling and econometrics, with a profound understanding of international trade and the history of economic thought. He has published articles related to these subjects on various kinds of academic journals. He has stood out because of his rich imaginations and broad research interests. 

Jiang has broad research interests. His research is mainly divided into two types: political economics and international trade & development. In terms of political economics, Jiang shows interest in the works of classical political economists, focuses on their opinions on growth, income distribution and economic instability. Jiang tends to explore this type of problems with modern quantitative techniques, such as mathematical modeling, computer simulation and econometrics. Regarding international trade & development, Jiang mainly studies the influence of globalization on income distribution and the labor market. He obtained his doctoral degree in 2012, and since then he has published 10 papers, 4 book chapters and 5 working drafts on international academic journals. Jiang used to serve as an economic adviser at the International Labor Organization of the United Nations, the Economic Policy Institute in Washington and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN. He is now trying to develop a macro model framework that is more suitable for developing countries based on the perspective of open political economics.
