Prof. Long Denggao Hired as Member of Expert Advisory Committee of Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council

The conference for the Expert Advisory Committee of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council grandly took place on August 22, 2017. Yu Zhengsheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC, met with representatives of the Expert Advisory Committee and delivered a keynote speech at the Great Hall of the People. More than 200 top international experts and scholars in various areas were hired as members of the Expert Advisory Committee, including up to 100 academicians from Europe and the U.S. Notably, Prof. Long Denggao from the School of Social Sciences was also hired as a member of the Expert Advisory Committee.

At the conference, Yu urged more efforts to be made to bring think tanks into full play, conduct prospective, strategic and targeted research surrounding key issues during the reform and opening-up and modernization construction, and give professional and constructive policy suggestions that will provide strong support for scientific decision-making. He also called on the members to offer advice and suggestions and be brave in criticism according to the pragmatic scientific spirit, as well as make use of their advantage in mastery of Western and Chinese knowledge to act as a bridge between foreign countries and China. State Councilor Yang Jiechi also attended the conference.

Wan Gang, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC, delivered a special report themed “accelerating innovation-driven development and building China into a technology power in the world”. He said China has made big progress in technological innovation and industry promotion in the recent decade, but still needs to stay calm as the gap with the U.S. is still remarkable. In technological innovation, the government should give support, and the market will dominate – the government is dedicated to the basic theory, long-term strategy and platform construction, while civil organizations and enterprises deliver creative ideas, technological innovation and its industrial transfer.

Qiu Yuanping, Director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, delivered a keynote report, while Xu Yousheng, Secretary of the Leading Party Group, and Deputy Director Tan Tianxing and Guo Jun also gave speeches respectively.

Since the first conference for the Expert Advisory Committee in 2004, Long Denggao, Director of the Tsinghua University Center for Chinese Entrepreneur Studies (CCES) and Professor of the School of Social Sciences, has been hired as member of the Committee for five consecutive times.
