On January 20, 2026, Prof. Markku Kulmala, Academician of the Academy of Finland, Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor at the University of Helsinki, Finland, was appointed Honorary Professor of Tsinghua University and delivered the 265th lecture in the Global Vision Lecture Series. Prof. Wang Hongwei, Vice President of Tsinghua University, attended the ceremony and presented the letter of appointment to Prof. Markku Kulmala. His Excellency Mikko Kinnunen, Ambassador of Finland to China, was also present and delivered a speech.

Prof. Wang Hongwei highly commended Prof. Markku Kulmala’s outstanding academic contributions in the field of atmospheric aerosol and the fruitful achievements of his long-term cooperation with Tsinghua University. He expressed the hope that Prof. Kulmala would further leverage his international academic influence to infuse new vitality into the university’s disciplinary development and global strategy.

Ambassador Mikko Kinnunen Delivers a Speech
Ambassador Mikko Kinnunen congratulated Prof. Markku Kulmala on his appointment as Honorary Professor of Tsinghua University. He expressed the expectation that this appointment would serve as a catalyst to deepen bilateral cooperation in climate change and low-carbon technology, and jointly promote global sustainable development.
Prof. Zhang Qiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor at Tsinghua University; Prof. Douglas Worsnop, Member of the United States National Academy of Engineering and Vice President of Aerodyne Research; Prof. Cao Junji from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Prof. Wang Lin, Chair of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at Fudan University; and Prof. Nie Wei from Nanjing University, delivered congratulatory remarks respectively.

Kulmala Delivers Keynote Lecture
Following this, Prof. Markku Kulmala gave a keynote speech titled "For the Only Planet We Have", focusing on global environmental challenges and emphasizing the importance of comprehensive open data, open science, and collaborative frameworks that connect research, innovation, and policy.
During the interactive session, faculty and students present exchanged views with Prof. Markku Kulmala on cutting-edge issues. Prof. Wang Can, Chairman of the School Council, School of Environment, presided over the event and presented Prof. Kulmala with a commemorative plaque of the Global Vision Lecture Series.
Over 150 participants attended the event, including faculty and students from Tsinghua University, as well as representatives from the University of Helsinki and partner institutions.

Event Highlights
This event was co-hosted by the International Cooperation and Exchange Office, the School of Environment, and State Key Laboratory of Regional Environment and Sustainability. The Global Vision Lecture Series was launched in 2007 and has successfully hosted 265 lectures to date, becoming an important platform for broadening the international perspective of faculty and students and deepening global cooperation.
