Forests and Streams Resplendently Clear: Reflecting and Representing Nature in Chinese Painting

Exhibition Time:  20 April 2021 - 20 October 2021
Exhibition Venue:  Exhibition Hall 10, 4th Floor, Tsinghua University Art Museum

The exhibition held by Tsinghua University Art Museum and the Capital Museum, China, pays tribute to the 110th birthday of Tsinghua University. The title "Forests and Streams Resplendently Clear" borrows from the poetic verse that has lent Tsinghua its name: "Tsinghua" literally refers to "limpid waters and beautiful woods where chirping birds gather in the dusk", a scene described in the poem "Visiting the West Pond" by Xie Hun (4th–5th century). The exhibition reflects the ancient Chinese people's philosophy towards nature.

The exhibition shows paintings of Li Gonglin, Su Shi, and other works from the Song and Yuan dynasties that have not been displayed before. Works of other artists from the Ming and Qing dynasties such as Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, Qiu Ying, Dong Qichang, Chen Hongshou, Bada Shanren  (pseudonym of Zhu Da), and Shi Tao, are also included in the exhibition. The "nature" shown in these works continues to inspire the beholders’ contemplation of the relationship between human beings and nature.
