China Scored a Major Breakthrough in Photo-disc Technology

Nov. 28, 2002 witnessed the multi-wavelength and polyvalent memory technology for light disk and its experimental system worked and turned out by Tsinghua University passed the appraisal of the experts. By using the technology it is possible to raise the memory volume to three times that of an ordinary light disk, indicating that China has made a major breakthrough in photo-disk technology.

The technology is one of the key programs in primary researches for the national 973 project of the country, a breakthrough in super-density and super-speed photo-information memory and processing technology at this stage. The 973 project-group of the National Photo-disk Engineering Center with Prof. Xu Duanyi at the head has achieved the creative result after three years of assiduous studies and applied for nine patent rights in China and one in the United States.

The result has been put into formal industrialization process with photo-disk driver and photo-disc video recorder worked out. With an integrated chip added into the ordinary photo-disc recorder, it is possible to expand the memory of 0.65G for an ordinary photo-disc to 2G in volume, i.e. equal to a movie program of more than three hours. The price of a photo-disc driver turned out with the technology is similar to an ordinary photo-driver, but far lower than that of a DVD.

Approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and sponsored by Ministry of Education the appraisal for the technology was carried out and passed here on this day in Tsinghua University. Experts pointed out, the multi-wavelength and polyvalent memory technology is a sort of innovation at the crucial level of the very physical pattern, a new type of memory program after the DVD technology. The technology successfully worked out from study and research has opened up for China a new path for the production of photo-discs with China's own intellectual property rights.
