The Beijing First Intermediate People's Court sentenced Huang Minxiang, 26, to life imprisonment Tuesday after being found guilty of carrying out two explosions at Qinghua (Tsinghua) University and Beijing University.
Huang, an employee at the Qiongshan Hongfeng Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. in south China's Hainan province prior to his arrest, executed the blasts at the two prestigious universities in Beijing in order to make himself famous, noted thecourt verdict.
According to the court, Huang carried black explosive powder bytrain to Beijing on Feb. 21 with the explosion scheme in mind. To carry out his plan, he purchased more explosive devices and assembled two remote control devices.
At 11:20 a.m. on Feb. 25, Huang placed the two timed bombs in the respective dining halls of the two universities. They then exploded at 11:50 a.m. and 1:20 p.m. respectively, injuring nine people and causing more than 220,000 yuan (about 26,500 US dollars) in damages, the court noted.
Huang fled Beijing the day the explosions occurred, but was later detained by police, the court said. At the trial of the Beijing First Intermediate People's Court on April 1, Huang confessed to the crimes and apologized to those injured in the explosions.
