Body of leading Chinese philosopher cremated

BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhuanet) -- The body of Professor Zhang Dainian, one of the leading philosophers in China, was cremated at the Babaoshan crematorium in Beijing Friday.

Zhang died of illness in Beijing on April 24, at the age of 95.

Top leaders Hu Jintao, Jiang Zemin, Wen Jiabao, Zeng Qinghong, Wu Guanzheng and Li Changchun and many senior officials sent their soothing words and condolences before and after the death of the philosopher.

Representatives of all circles attended the cremation and bade farewell to the philosopher.

Zhang began teaching at the Qinghua University in 1933 and completed his well-known works "The Outline of Chinese Philosophy". During the Anti-Japanese War (1937-1945), he refused to work under the Japanese rule.

In 1951, Zhang became a professor of Qinghua and in 1952, he went to teach at Beijing University. In 1979, he was elected the first chairman of the Chinese Society of Philosophic History.

Since the 1930s-40s, Zhang had set up his own philosophic system and began to advocate his own cultural view known as the "comprehensive innovation". He had taught for 70 years. Enditem
