Thursday 24 June 2004

The President of China’s prestigious Tsinghua University, Professor Gu Binglin, visited the University of Melbourne recently, heading up a high-level leadership team from Tsinghua invited to Australia as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Australia-China Council.

Professor Gu, who was last year appointed President of Tsinghua University, was making his third visit to the University since 1996.

Tsinghua University is widely considered one of the top universities in China. The relationship between the two universities was formalised in 1995, with the signing of an agreement for academic cooperation and exchange.

Since then there has been an increasing number of leadership, research and scholarly visits between the two universities. A particularly strong and growing academic and research collaboration partnership exists between the two universities in the field of Chemical Engineering.

Five Melbourne students will be on exchange at Tsinghua in 2004. Four Tsinghua students, the first ever from Tsinghua to study at Melbourne, will commence here in semester two this year and a Shadowing Program for Administrative Staff from Tsinghua will be inaugurated later this year.
