US graduate students to conduct joint research with Chinese

   BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Twenty-nine graduate students from the United States are scheduled to conduct joint research with Chinese scientists at the most advanced labs in China.

    The Summer Institute in China for US Graduate Students in Science and Engineering, a bilateral program agreed to by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and the US National Science Foundation (NSF), selected the US students from Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University and other prestigious US academic institutions.

    The two sides launched the program last year at the co-sponsorship of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

    The areas of interest of the 29 students include life sciences, genetic engineering, eco-environmental protection, applied mathematics, physics, automation, machinery, computing engineering,anthropology, psychology and economics.

    Shang Yong, vice minister of Science and Technology, said at the program's yearly inauguration that young researchers from both China and the U.S. should join hands in addressing scientific and technological problems in modern times.

    Through mid-August, the US graduate students will be arranged to study and do researches at top-rated Qinghua (Tsinghua) University and Beijing University in Beijing, Fudan University andJiaotong University in Shanghai, the Chinese University of Science and Technology in east China's Anhui Province and some relevant CAS institutes.
