An initiative to improve the water quality in developing countries has been launched.

The Computing for Clean Water Project will be conducted by researchers from the Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, together with scientists from other institutions in an attempt to improve access to safe drinking water in under-developed areas of the world.

According to WaterLink International, it is intended to "understand the molecular scale properties of a new class of efficient and inexpensive water filter materials, which may help to satisfy demand for inexpensive, clean drinking water".

It added that access to good quality water remains a "major challenge" to many areas in the world.

The project will allow scientists to investigate new means to produce efficient low-cost water filtering, which can be utilised on a wider scale.

Earlier this week, WaterLink International also released details of a new report published by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, which looked at long-term sustainable use of water in the UK.

It called for more carbon, water and resource efficiency and greater reuse of water.
