Tsinghua opens public health research centre

Tsinghua Public Health Centre, the first public health research centre of its kind in China, was established in Beijing on Nov. 5.

Yin Li, vice minister of health, and Chen Jining, vice president of Tsinghua University, made the announcement at the Fifth China Health Communication Conference and Tsinghua Public Health Science Conference in Beijing.

The research centre is an independent research and teaching entity jointly initiated by Jing Jun, deputy director of the AIDS Policy Research Centre and professor of sociology of Tsinghua University, Li Xiguang, director of Tsinghua University Institute of Health Communication and deputy director of Comprehensive AIDS Research Centre as well as Professor Zhang Linqi from Tsinghua University and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union University.

It is an interdisciplinary research centre covering life science, sociology, health education, health communication, environmental sciences as well as public management and policies.

In his keynote speech delivered at the opening ceremony of the conference, Vice Health Minister Yin Li said that the research centre would play a vital role in solving major public health problems, produce positive academic and social effects as well as contribute to the development of the cause of public health in China.

Vice President Chen noted that the establishment of the centre would serve as a milestone for Tsinghua University, which has been attaching great importance to disciplinary interaction and win-win scenarios as well as its centennial tradition of respect to human and people's livelihood.

Apart from research, the centre will also provide master program for public health. With rich academic resources from Tsinghua University, the centre will cultivate more and more professionals in the fields of health education, health communication, AIDS prevention, social advocacy, disease prevention and health protection.
