Tsinghua SEM Launched a New Course “ZHU Rongji Economic and Management Theory and Practice” in the Fall Semester 2016


This year marks the fifth anniversary for the publication of ZHU Rongji on the Record, founding dean of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM). Tsinghua SEM launched a 16-hour 1-credit course “ZHU Rongji Economic and Management Theory and Practice” in the fall semester 2016. On September 12, the first day of the new academic year, Professor QIAN Yingyi, Dean of Tsinghua SEM, delivered the first lecture of the course on the topics of “Thoughts on Education” and “Macroeconomic Management”.

The books ZHU Rongji Meets the Press, ZHU Rongji on the Record and Zhu Rongji’s Speeches in Shanghai are collections of speeches, articles, letters and instructions from ZHU Rongji from his tenure as the mayor of Shanghai, chief of the municipal committee of the Communist Party, vice premier and premier of the State Council of China, embodying his economic and management theory and practice.

"These works are important literatures about the reform and opening up in China, as well as valuable assets to Tsinghua SEM. Learning and researching into ZHU Rongji’s economic and management theory and practice will be significant and meaningful for the SEM students to study the road of economic reform and opening up in China and understand the Dean ZHU’s thoughts and practice in this regard,” said Professor QIAN Yingyi, Dean of Tsinghua SEM.

This course will cover 14 topics, including “Thoughts on Education”, “Macroeconomic Management”, “Enterprise Reform”, “Industrial Development”, “Fiscal and Taxation Reform”, “Social Welfare System”, “Financial Reform”, “Opening Up and External Relations”, “Grain Distribution”, “Agricultural Development”, “Urban Planning and Development”, “Housing Reform”, “Transformation of Government Functions”, “Leadership and Work Styles of Government Officials”.  In addition to the school faculty, this course will also invite a number of outside experts and scholars to lecture.

The course has received warm welcome from Tsinghua SEM students. Over 500 students from undergraduate, master’s, PhD, MBA and EMBA programs have enrolled in the course.
