Workshop for NSFC-ANR Historical Chinese Manuscript Recognition (GuWenShiBie) Project held at Tsinghua

The workshop for NSFC-ANR Historical Chinese Manuscript Recognition (GuWenShiBie) Project was held at Tsinghua University on October 27.

The workshop is supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the French National Research Agency (French: Agence Nationale de la Recherche, ANR) joint-funded project, which is directed by two principal investigators, one is Associate Professor PENG Liangrui from Department of Electronic Engineering, the other is Professor Frank LeBourgeois from the University of Lyon. The purpose of this project is to develop full-text digitization technologies for better protection and utilization of historical Chinese manuscripts.

The deputy director SU Fen at the Project Management Office of Tsinghua University, and Prof. DING Xiaoqing at the Department of Electronic Engineering attended the workshop and delivered their addresses.

Prof. Frank LeBourgeois from the University of Lyon presented a report at the workshop.

This project is conducted in collaboration with National Library of China, which provided the image samples of their unique collection of Dunhuang historical documents. From the lauch of the project at the beginning of the year 2013,  the collaborators of both Chinese and French parties made significant progresses on historical Chinese document image processing, layout analysis, character segmentation and recognition, and the design and implementation of historical Chinese document recognition system. The project will be finished at December 2015. At the workshop, the attendees communicated about their recent achievements and discussed on the future research collaborations. About 20 people from both Chinese and French project research groups attended the workshop.
