Dr. ZHAO Chao from Academy of Arts & Design Won Red Dot Award
Three design products from Dr. ZHAO Chao, director of Dept. of the Industrial Design, won Red Dot Product Design Award.
The three awarded design products are High Throughput Microarray Scanner, Isothermal Chip Detection Instrument, and Easy Array Integrated Workstation which constitute Molecular Diagnosis System, an instrument platform for high through screening and point-of-care test. These products are designed for CapitalBio Corporation which is a leading life science company in China.
Dr. ZHAO Chao combined customer-focused design concept with the semantics method of function-visualization to create a comfortable, efficient, and easy-using experience for the clinical and laboratory users. By the emotional design language and giving consideration to users, his design products redefined the terms of medical aesthetics, user experience and product function in molecular diagnosis field.
The three awarded designs integrated technical feasibility with aesthetic cognition, created a unique language of life-science and technology, harmonized the product with laboratory and hospital environment. Using ingenious design thought to combine complicated technology into compact appliance ensured the convenient movement of the product. The innovation design in these products not only realize the reliable, visual, efficient clinical function, but also contribute to the patients’ long-term health with user-friendly experience by the social innovative practice.
Dr. ZHAO Chao devoted himself into industrial design, especially in inter-discipline research and practice. As the head of Industrial Design Department and Healthcare Design Innovation Lab, he focuses on transforming and utilizing research findings into manufacture. Collaborating with Academician WU Mengchao from Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academician CHENG Jing from Chinese Academy of Engineering, Dr. ZHAO Chao has been keeping searching humanistic design methods in health-care industry with the integration and innovation from cross-discipline.
Only a few innovative international corporations, such like Apple Inc., Siemens Corp., Philips, could win this award with several design works at the same time. The three awarded works indicated that the technology of innovative industrial design and humanized user experience design for Life-Science and Health-care has reached the leading position in the world.
Background
Red Dot Award is a well known international innovation and design award originated from Germany. With a history of more than 60 years, it’s recognized as one of the largest and most authoritative design competitions in the world. Its position is as same as Oscars Award in film industry. Red Dot Award includes three categories: Red Dot Product Design, Red Dot Communication Design and Red Dot Design Concept. The Red Dot Product Design Award which Dr. ZHAO Chao won is considered as the symbol of superior design since it is the most competitive and stringent in Red Dot Award. The international jury only award this coveted prize to the most brilliant and extraordinary designs. As a designer, the recognition from Red Dot Award is the highest honor and achievement.
