The School of Humanities and Social Sciences celebrated its 10th anniversary at a gathering on December 19 attended by faculty, students and government officials, representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Party School of the CPC Central Committee, Office of Documentary Research of the CPC Central Committee, Peking University, and People’s University.
In his opening speech, President Gu Binlin pointed out that social sciences are as important as natural sciences and technology. The advance of social sciences is not only indispensable to the development of Chinese higher education, but also to the progress of society, he said.
Li Qiang and Hu Xianzhang, the current and former deans of the school, also spoke at the event, outlining the past, present, and future goals of the social sciences at Tsinghua.
The history of social science education at Tsinghua dates back to the establishment of the Institute of Chinese Culture in 1925. The opening in 1993 of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences was an important step toward building Tsinghua into a world-class university.
Tsinghua’s social sciences program now awards both undergraduate and graduate degrees in seven majors, including literature, history, philosophy, law science, economics, education, and management.
The school is also active in domestic and international academic exchange, and offers numerous training programs in continuing education.
