Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber gives lecture at the Tsinghua Forum

On June 24th, Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, member of the German Academy of Sciences and the US National Academy of Sciences, was invited to attend the Tsinghua Forum and gave a lecture entitled “Where on Earth Are We Going: Existential Crisis or Disruptive Transformation?” The forum was chaired by Professor Gong Peng, Chair of the Department of Earth System Science and Dean of the School of Science at Tsinghua University.

Professor Schellnhuber was appointed by Tsinghua University as a distinguished Visiting Professor. The certificate of appointment was awarded to Professor Schellnhuber by Professor Gong Peng before the forum.

As a leading scholar in the field of global climate change, Professor Schellnhuber has analyzed the challenges and threats posed by global climate change to the earth's ecosystems and human survival from the perspective of geosystem analysis. Later, Professor Schellnhuber further explored the possible strategies to be taken by mankind in response to climate change, including analysis of a rapid path for carbon emission reduction and possible contribution of renewable energy to mitigating climate change. Professor Schellnhuber also boldly proposed whether human beings could use biomass materials to build residential areas, thereby trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in buildings and further mitigating the impact of climate change.
