Tsinghua x-lab Startup Bluepha Wins 2017 Future Planet Sustainable Growth Award


Future Planet Capital, an innovation platform, hosted its annual awards ceremony honoring the best start-ups across five categories at the Global Corporate Venturing Symposium on May 23. PragmatIC, which develops ultra-low cost flexible electronics, was the overall winner of the “2017 Future Planet Award” and the “Security Award.” Bluepha, a synthetic biology and biomaterial companybased in Tsinghua’s x-lab, was honored with the “Sustainable Growth Award.”

The Future Planet Awards is hosted by the Future Planet Capital and aims to find breakthroughs in five  categories including Sustainable Growth, Security, Climate Change, Health and Education. Future Planet Awards’ goal is to bring together investors, start-ups and academics to meet the challenges of  the future. The competition invited teams from 12 countries worldwide, and drew the attention of the world’s leading innovation centers at universities such as Oxford University, Cambridge University, Imperial College London, Tsinghua University, University of Tokyo, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among others.

Bluepha is the only Chinese company to be selected for this event, which marks a worldwide recognition of Chinese technological innovation. The company  produces ecofriendly plastic, and ith global plastics production standing at over 300 million tons a year and more than 99 percent of plastics made from non-renewable fossil fuels, the market for Bluepha’s technology is vast.

Bluepha was founded as a student start-up biomaterials team in November 2014. At the time, LI Teng and ZHANG Hao were doctoral students at Tsinghua University and Peking University, respectively. Just one month later, the Bluepha Biomaterials Team joined the Tsinghua x-lab and participated in a series of training activities. In May 2015, the team won the 2nd Tsinghua President’s Cup. In 2016, Bluepha was officially registered as a company.
