Tsinghua University Council Chairperson Chen Xu Visits Georgetown University, Brookings Institution and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Promoting Exchanges and Cooperation with U.S. Universities and Think Tanks


On May 30th and 31st, Chen Xu, Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council, visited Georgetown University in Washington DC, the United States and signed a Letter of Intent on US-China Dialogue Collaborative Programs between the two universities. At the same time, she attended the “Higher Education and the Future of US-China Dialogue” at Georgetown University. During her stay, Professor Chen paid a visit to the Brookings Institution and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and held discussions on the cooperation between Tsinghua University and think tanks. Yang Bin, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, also attended the above events.

Tsinghua University and Georgetown University are long term partners in global governance talents cultivation and China-US dialogue. During her visit to Georgetown University, Chen Xu met with President John DeGioia, and the two parties co-signed “Letter of Intent on US-China Dialogue Collaborative Programs between Tsinghua University and Georgetown University”.

At the signing ceremony, Chen Xu noted that Tsinghua University and Georgetown University have maintained their long-term partnership on talent cultivation and scientific research. With the signing of a new Letter of Intent, the two universities will cooperate to establish a dual degree program on global governance and a cooperation council to jointly promote the collaboration and exchanges between China and the U.S. on higher education, establish an exchange platform for the young generation in both countries, and further support to cope with global challenges.

Following the signing ceremony, the Georgetown Initiative for US-China Dialogue on Global Issues held a “Higher Education and the Future of US-China Dialogue”. In her address, Chen Xu pointed out that China and the U.S. share a common pursuit of peace and development while facing the same global challenges such as the environment, climate, security and development. Universities from the two countries must actively take up the responsibilities of talent cultivation and innovation enlightenment, provide scholars and young people with more opportunities for wider and deeper exchanges, and further support the development for a better world.

Chen Xu briefed Tsinghua’s Global Strategy and existing collaborations with universities in the U.S., especially Georgetown University. She noted that, with new vision and wisdom, Tsinghua will join hands with Georgetown University to elevate the China-US cooperation in higher education.

During their visit to Washington DC, Chen Xu and the Tsinghua delegation were invited to visit the Brookings Institution and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and meet with John Thornton, Co-chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Brookings Institution, Strobe Talbott, President of the Brookings Institution, William Burns, President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and other think tanks leaderships, promoting the collaboration and exchanges between Tsinghua University and international think tanks.
