Professor Ding Xiaoqing from Tsinghua's Department of Electronic Engineering was named an IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Fellow recently for her contributions to multilingual character recognition and face recognition systems.

Ding Xiaoqing is a professor and PhD supervisor at Tsinghua University. She has been engaged in such fields as image processing, pattern recognition, biometric identification and computer vision for a long time. Professor Ding won four of the most prestigious National Scientific and Technical Progress Awards in China in 1992, 1998, 2003 and 2008. She has made a series of noteworthy achievements in multilingual (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Tibetan, Uighur, Arabic, English) character and document recognition, as well as in face recognition. Professor Ding has published more than 450 papers, coauthored six books and holds 19 invention patents. She won the award for "Best Overall Performing Face Verification Algorithm" in FAT2004 and got higher performance in FRVT2006. Professor Ding is a fellow of the IAPR (The International Association for Pattern Recognition).

The distinction of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the Institute's fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and a very important career achievement. 321 individuals have been elevated to IEEE Fellow status for 2011.
