1. Seventeen Tsinghua research achievements won 2007 State Science and Technology Awards. Tsinghua professors accepted the awards on January 8 in Beijing at the annual National Science-Technology Award Ceremony in the Great Hall of the People. Tsinghua’s research achievements ranked first among Chinese universities. Of Tsinghua’s seventeen awards, one was a State Natural Science Award second prize; eight were State Technological Invention Award second prizes; and eight were State Scientific and Technological Progress Award second prizes.

2. On March 1st Tsinghua University officially inaugurated its new Department of International Relations in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Professor Yan Xuetong, renowned Chinese international relations expert and Director of IIS, became Dean of International Relations. On July 6th Tsinghua University officially inaugurated its new School of Marxism (SMARX). Professor Xing Bensi became Chair of the School of Marxism. On October 17 Tsinghua University officially announced the re-founding of its Department of Psychology (PSYC) under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. World-famous psychologist and tenured faculty member in the Department of Psychology of the University of California at Berkeley Peng Kaiping became the first Dean of the Department of Psychology.

 4. The foundation for Tsinghua’s New Xuetang was laid on April 27. The building will be finished by the end of 2010 and become a landmark for Tsinghua’s 100th Anniversary celebration in 2011. Donated by four alumni and designed by academician Li Daozeng, a professor in Tsinghua’s School of Architecture, the New Xuetang will serve as a venue for high-level academic exchanges and arts performances.

 5. Tsinghua faculty, staff, and students contributed their efforts to the earthquake victims. They joined the donation drives to support relief efforts in the earthquake-hit area. Nearly 1,000 Tsinghua faculty, staff, and students supported the blood drive. Tsinghua University formed expert teams to provide support to communities and victims in the earthquake-hit area.   

 6. Tsinghua faculty and staff participated in over 100 Olympic related research projects, including stadium and venue design, image development, safety evaluation of Olympic Projects, environmental monitoring, energy saving evaluation, information based management, and intelligent transportation systems, making contributions to the successful realization of a Green, Technological, and Cultural Olympics. A total of more than 3,000 Tsinghua students worked as volunteers for the Olympics and Para-Olympics. Six Tsinghua students and faculty members participated as contestants in the Games. Most notably Tsinghua student Hu Kai, known on campus as ‘the bespectacled flyer’, made a historical breakthrough for a Chinese track and field athlete by qualifying for the second round of the Men's 100 Meter Dash with a time of 10.40 seconds.

 7. The High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Nuclear Power Station Demonstration Project hosted by Tsinghua was formally started.

 8. Tsinghua acquired Warring States Bamboo Strips from the state of Chu. An alumnus donated an invaluable collection of Warring States period bamboo strips to Tsinghua University in July. A panel of eleven experts authenticated the bamboo strips. They noted that the bamboo strips were mainly parts of books, most of them never been seen before. Their academic value for historical research is inestimable. They will also be invaluable sources for the study of bamboo materials and the ancient writing.
