Tsinghua Student Athletes and Sport Faculty Members Head for the Olympics

Tsinghua students Zhao Yinghui and Cao Yifei, both Tsinghua shooting team members, stood out in the Olympic Trial’s for the air rifle event on March 12. As Ms. Zhao and Mr. Cao both took second place in the 10-meter air rifle shooting events, they qualified to advance to the coming Olympic Games.

Mr. Hu Kai, well known as “the bespectacled flier”, a second-year postgraduate student from Tsinghua’s School of Economics and Management, defeated the famous Japanese runner Shingo Suetsugu to win the 100-meter dash in 10.54 seconds at the Osaka Grand Prix 2008 on May 10. Based on his performance and  his team member’s performance in the men's 4x100m relay, it would be very possible for Hu to enter the Olympic Games. He now devotes his time and energy to intensive ultimate training.

Tsinghua student Liu Qing won the bronze medal in the women’s 1500-meter track and field event in the 23rd World University Games held in Turkey on August 18. She took the top title in the women’s 1,500m in the Chinese Olympic track and field trials held  June 27-29 with a time of 4 minutes and 6.14 seconds, meeting the Olympic standard and winning her ticket to the Beijing  Games.

Tsinghua student Li Xiangyu won the gold medal in the men’s 800-meter track and field event in the “Good Luck Beijing” China Athletics Open. He is currently the only athlete in China to meet the Olympic standard in the men’s 800-meter track event. Meanwhile, Tsinghua teacher Liu Yinghui won a gold medal in the 2003 World University Games in the women's hammer throw and has met the Olympic standard in this field event.

Apart from student athletes, some Tsinghua faculty members will serve as referees and officials at the Olympic Games.
