Renowned Camapplied mathematics and theoretical physics Professor Athanassios S. Fokas visited Tsinghua University on June 12 and delivered a speech entitled “Mathematics, Medical Imaging and the Search of Consciousness” in Tsinghua Global Vision Lectures Series.
A.S. Fokas has a BSc in Aeronautics from Imperial College, a PhD in Appied Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology and an MD from the University of Miami, School of Medicine.
In 1986, at the age of 33, he was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of Clarkson University, USA. In 1996 he was appointed to a Chair in Applied Mathematics at Imperial College, UK. In 2002 he was appointed to the newly inaugurated Chair in Nonlinear Mathematical Science at the University of Cambridge, UK. He is winner of the Naylor Prize and the Aristeion Prize in Sciences of the Academy of Athens.
The Tsinghua Global Vision Lectures includes two parts—the Global Leadership series and the Advanced Studies series. The Global Leadership series features such speakers as foreign state and international organization leaders, board chairmen, CEOs of international companies, overseas university presidents, and world-famous scholars. They will address topics mainly in the humanities and social sciences. The Advanced Studies series will invite renowned academic prize winners including Nobel Prize winners, Fields Medal winners, Turing Award winners, and renowned scholars to speak on cross-disciplinary knowledge, frontiers studies, and recent research in related fields.
