UC Berkeley Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Talks about Education During an Interview

During Berkeley Week at Tsinghua, University of California at Berkeley Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost George Breslauer granted an interview to the Tsinghua News Center in which he shared his ideas about education, cooperation and exchange.

During the interview, Professor Breslauer focused on excellence in education. He said, “Education is the process of training students to learn how to seek knowledge on their own and think creatively about problem solving and the great issues that face both the world today and humankind throughout history and philosophic issues as well.“ He emphasized the importance of recruiting professors who are not only very good researchers but also good teachers committed to teaching. He noted that there is a growing emphasis on interdisciplinary graduate education at the University of California, Berkeley. 

Talking about cooperation between Tsinghua and the University of California, Berkeley, Professor Breslauer said that he is very encouraged to see the two universities starting new programs in psychology and technological innovation. He said that Berkeley looks forward to helping Tsinghua rebuild its Department of Psychology into the best psychology department in China. “Tsinghua is very strong in technological innovation. We hope our collaboration could be further enhanced,” he said.
