Hubertus Christ, president of the Association Engineers (VDI, Verein Deutscher Ingenieure), was named a visiting professor of Tsinghua's Engineering Department May 8. Professor Christ was formally appointed to the position by Tsinghua President Wang Dazhong at a ceremony in the Main Building.
President Wang said he believed Professor Christ's work here would spur the cooperation and communication between Tsinghua and VDI, and also improve the ties between Tsinghua and universities in Germany.
Professor Christ received his doctorate in engineering from Karlsruhe Technical University in Germany. He became a professor at the university in 1975. In 1998 he assumed the presidency of VDI.
He has published many papers and other works in the fields of mechanical engineering, automobile and transportation systems, environmental technology, manufacturing and technical design, and more.
Professor Christ gave an address on the "Future of Technology Development." Following the ceremony, he visited the library and the Committee for Cooperation between Tsinghua University and Enterprises.
Tsinghua Vice President Hu Dongcheng presided over the ceremony.
