The Tsinghua Graduate School in Shenzhen was officially established on June 8 at the Research Institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen.
With the approval of the Education Ministry, Tsinghua Graduate School Shenzhen branch is the only graduate school apart from the main campus of Tsinghua which located in the capital city of China. The majors for graduate students at this branch of the graduate school include telecommunication, computer science, environmental science and engineering, material science, biotechnology, applied mathematics, advanced manufacture, and industrial design. It plans to have a scale of 3,000 graduate students in 2005. Now, more than 780 graduate students majoring in electronics, computer science and MBA has already studied at the research institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen.
Li Zibin, mayor of Shenzhen and Wang Dazhong, president of Tsinghua signed an agreement on joint establishment of the research institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen in 1996.
In 1999, the Research Institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen was completed with a floorspace of 32,000 square meters. The institute is gradually becoming a base for applied science and technology in Southern China, a cradle for fostering high level experts, an engine for technical innovations and the incubation of scientific and technological achievements, a base for putting into production new high-tech technologies, a bridge for linking the bases of production, research and teaching of Beijing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong and a base for international technical development and information exchanges.
