10th Triennial International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians kicks off in Shanghai

On January 3, the Tenth Triennial International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM), themed “New Frontiers: Mathematics for Transforming Science and Humanity”, kicked off in Shanghai.

Chen Jining, Party secretary of Shanghai, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, noting that advancing the Chinese path to modernization relies at all times on the foundational and strategic support of education, science and technology, and talent, as well as on the sustained strengthening of basic disciplines and fundamental research, which provide the essential groundwork and momentum.

He stated that Chinese mathematicians are active advocates and committed practitioners of an open and innovative ecosystem. He hopes the congress will collaboratively explore the frontiers of mathematical science, cultivate and attract young mathematical talent, and expand international cooperation in mathematics. This collaboration aims to foster an open, fair, just and non-discriminatory innovation environment and promote greater innovation outcomes for more people across the globe.

Gong Zheng, deputy secretary of the Shanghai municipal Party committee and mayor of Shanghai, was also present at the event.

At the opening ceremony, Tsinghua University President Li Luming introduced the leaps in development achieved by Tsinghua's mathematics discipline in recent years in terms of talent recruitment, academic research, and talent cultivation.

He noted that Tsinghua will continue to give strong support to the development of mathematics, making every effort to create a favorable environment for disciplinary development and the training of top innovative talent. Li hopes that more leading mathematicians will come to Tsinghua to share cutting-edge research and deepen academic exchange, thereby contributing to a new chapter in advancing basic science and promoting human civilization.

Shing-Tung Yau, president of the ICCM and director of the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center at Tsinghua University, reviewed the more than two-decade development of the ICCM. He stated that greater efforts are needed to independently cultivate mathematically creative talent, attract outstanding scholars from around the world to work in China, and further strengthen the indispensable role of mathematics as a foundational discipline in the global era of science and technology.

Chen Jiachang, vice-minister of science and technology; Qiu Xin, secretary of the CPC Fudan University Committee; and Caucher Birkar, a Fields Medalist and professor at the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center, also delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. Shanghai municipal officials Hua Yuan and Chen Jie, as well as Ding Kuiling, president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, were also present.

The congress presented a series of awards, including the ICCM Gold Medal of Mathematics, the ICCM Silver Medal of Mathematics, the ICCM Chern Prize, the ICCM Hua Prize, the ICCM Lin Prize, the ICCM International Cooperation Award, the ICCM Yang Prize and the ICCM Best Paper Award.

Professor Caucher Birkar was awarded the Wilfried Schmid International Cooperation Award, while Professor Peng Shan received the Yang Prize and Professor Yihang Zhu was honored with the ICCM Silver Medal of Mathematics. Additionally, Professors Yunhui Wu, Hansheng Diao, and Honghao Gao received the BPA.

The 10th Triennial International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) kicks off in Shanghai on January 3.

The five-day congress features more than 300 high-level academic presentations and exchange activities, offering a comprehensive showcase of the latest advances and frontier trends in mathematical research. Thousands of mathematicians, researchers, and university faculty and students from multiple countries and regions around the world are attending the event.

The International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) was founded in 1998 by Shing-Tung Yau. It serves as a major platform to showcase the highest achievements of Chinese mathematicians worldwide.

As one of the most influential academic events in the Chinese mathematical community, the ICCM aims to promote academic exchange and collaboration among Chinese mathematicians through organizing academic meetings and recognizing outstanding research, while enhancing their visibility and impact in the international mathematical community.

The ICCM holds an annual academic conference and a full congress every three years. Over the years, it has grown into the largest and most influential top-tier academic gathering for Chinese mathematicians globally, and a unique forum for scholarly exchange and discussion on the development of basic sciences.

The congress ran through January 7, offering the global Chinese mathematical community an open, in-depth and diverse program of academic exchange and presentation of research achievements.
