​Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee Qiu Yong visits Hong Kong

From June 25 to 28, Qiu Yong, Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee, visited the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to deepen and expand the University's exchanges and cooperation with institutions in Hong Kong. Yang Bin, Vice Chancellor of Tsinghua University Council, participated in some of the activities.

Qiu Yong visited the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he held meetings and exchanges with Y.C. Richard Wong, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong; Lam Tai-fai, Chairman of Council of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and Harry SHUM Heung-Yeung, Chairman of the Council, and Nancy Y. Ip, President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Qiu Yong stated that, in alignment with the goal of building a leading country in education, Tsinghua University is steadily advancing a new round of comprehensive reform, continuously expanding high-level educational openness, and enhancing its capacity to serve national strategic needs and regional economic and social development. The University places great importance on collaboration with Hong Kong universities and looks forward to further strengthening cooperation in talent cultivation, academic exchange, and scientific research, working together to produce more landmark achievements and contribute to the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Leaders of three Hong Kong universities noted that Tsinghua University's achievements are widely recognized, and the two sides share a strong foundation and great potential for collaboration. Looking ahead, they aim to leverage Hong Kong’s unique role as a bridge between China and the world to further deepen exchanges in various fields. Efforts will focus on enhancing the quality and effectiveness of cooperation in areas such as joint degree programs, collaborative research, and faculty and student exchanges, jointly promoting the prosperity and development of both Hong Kong and mainland.

In the presence of representatives from both sides, Tsinghua University signed cooperation agreements with the University of Hong Kong focusing on public health, with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University focusing on talent cultivation in design disciplines, and with The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology focusing on scientific research collaboration as well as talent cultivation and training in electronic engineering and finance.

Visit to the Hong Kong Productivity Council

On June 26, Qiu Yong visited the Hong Kong Productivity Council and held discussions with Chairman Hon Sunny Tan on promoting deeper integration of industry, academia, and research, facilitating the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and supporting Hong Kong in developing new quality productive forces tailored to its local strengths.

Unveiling Ceremony of the undergraduate practical teaching base jointly established by Tsinghua University and CLP

On June 27, Qiu Yong visited CLP Holdings Limited and, together with the company’s CEO Chiang Tung Keung, witnessed the signing of strategic cooperation and donation agreements. They also unveiled the undergraduate practical teaching base jointly established by both parties. Qiu Yong expressed that, building on the good cooperation to date, Tsinghua University is willing to continue working closely with CLP to explore new pathways for industry-academia-research collaborative innovation, striving to cultivate more top-tier innovative talents in the energy technology field to serve the country's overall development. TK Chiang stated that he hopes both sides will jointly cultivate outstanding talents equipped with digital transformation and green innovation capabilities, supporting the development of the country’s energy sector and the achievement of the “dual carbon” goals.

Visit to the Hong Kong Civil Service Bureau

On the same day, a meeting was held with Yeung Ho Poi-yan, Secretary for the Civil Service of Hong Kong. During the discussions, Qiu Yong introduced the University’s latest developments and explored promoting educational exchanges between both sides, including enhancing advanced training programs for senior Hong Kong civil servants, and cultivating more senior professionals who understand China’s national conditions, familiar with Hong Kong, and love the country and Hong Kong.

On June 28, Qiu Yong held a discussion and exchange session with representatives of Tsinghua University alumni in Hong Kong. He encouraged the alumni to uphold the university motto of “Self-discipline and Social Commitment”, continue contributing to deepening cooperation between their alma mater and various sectors in Hong Kong, and achieve a more meaningful life by actively participating in the vibrant practice of building a better Hong Kong.

During the visit, Qiu Yong also met and exchanged views with people in Hong Kong who have contributed to supporting Tsinghua University's development in the long term.
