In celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil, and coinciding with President Xi's state visit to Brazil, Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee and Chairperson of the University Council Qiu Yong, led a delegation to Brazil from November 17 to 21. The delegation visited São Paulo, Brasília and Rio de Janeiro, engaged in fruitful exchanges with representatives from various sectors in Brazil, and signed cooperation agreements. Guided by the strategic consensus reached by the two heads of state, Tsinghua University is striving to enhance cooperation with Brazil in the fields of education, research, trade, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, contributing to building a China-Brazil community with a shared future for a more just world and a more sustainable planet.
Tsinghua University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
During the visit, on behalf of Tsinghua University, Qiu signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro for the “China-Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges” Program. As one of the 38 bilateral cooperation agreements signed during Xi’s visit, this memorandum was included as one of the outcomes of President Xi’s state visit to Brazil. The China-Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges Program aims to unite youth from China and Latin America to address challenges in poverty alleviation and other sustainable development areas. This initiative represents Tsinghua University's active role in promoting cultural exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations, as well as a vivid example of using education to contribute to building a China-Brazil community for a more just world and a more sustainable planet.
Tsinghua University enters a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of São Paulo.
On November 18, Qiu Yong led a delegation to visit the University of São Paulo, Brazil's first and largest modern university and met with the University's Rector, Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior. Qiu Yong emphasized that President Xi Jinping's state visit to Brazil will certainly lead China-Brazil relations into a “new golden 50 years.” Universities play an essential role in promoting academic exchanges, the intersection of ideas and cultural integration and should contribute to the long-term stability of bilateral relations. Tsinghua University is eager to deepen cooperation with the University of São Paulo in the fields of architecture, medicine, energy and sustainable development, promoting student and scholar exchanges and jointly creating important landmark achievements. Carlotti said that Tsinghua University is a prestigious institution in China with remarkable achievements in scientific research and innovation. He hopes to communicate and cooperate closely with Tsinghua to expand cultural exchanges and create a substantial joint future. Qiu Yong and Carlotti jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities and witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University and Institute of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo.

On November 19, Qiu Yong and his delegation visited the Ministry of Education of Brazil. In the presence of Brazil’s Minister of Education, Camilo Sobreira de Santana, Tsinghua University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal University of Ceará. In his remarks, Qiu introduced Tsinghua University’s global strategy and its cooperation with Brazilian universities. Qiu said that Tsinghua University looks forward to deepening collaboration in areas such as talent development, joint research, people-to-people and cultural exchange and faculty-student visits, using this agreement as a stepping stone to further the modernization efforts of the two countries with many more high-quality achievements. Santana noted that the prospects for cooperation between higher education institutions in China and Brazil are vast and Brazil is open to expanding exchanges and cooperation with Tsinghua University and other Chinese universities. Custódio Luís Silva de Almeida, Rector of the Federal University of Ceará, expressed his expectation for cooperation between the two universities and hoped that more Brazilian students and scholars would go to Tsinghua University for exchanges and study.

On November 20, the Tsinghua University-Brazilian National Confederation of Industry (CNI) Seminar was held in Brasília. Qiu Yong and Ricardo Alban, President of CNI, attended the event and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of both sides. Qiu said that China is accelerating the development of new productive forces, while Brazil is vigorously promoting development strategies such as the “New Industrial Policy” creating important opportunities for China-Brazil scientific, technological, and trade cooperation. Qiu expressed confidence that the seminar would serve as a catalyst for enhancing industry-university-research collaboration between Tsinghua University, Brazil and Latin America, generating mutually beneficial results and adding new impetus to pragmatic cooperation between the two countries. Alban remarked that China-Brazil relationship is at its best period in history and Tsinghua University is a world-renowned institution. He expressed great expectations for a new chapter of cooperation between the two sides. At the seminar, experts and scholars from both countries presented data-driven academic reports, outlining new opportunities for China-Brazil collaboration.
Seminar Site
On November 21, a seminar on China-Brazil Collaboration for Promoting Bio-Industry and Sustainable Development was held at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Qiu Yong and the university's rector, Roberto Medronho, expressed their desire for deepening the partnership between the two institutions and addressing global challenges. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the two parties. Tian Min, Chinese Consul-General in Rio de Janeiro also attended the seminar and delivered her remarks. During the seminar, Qiu also visited the laboratory of the Tsinghua-UFRJ China-Brazil Center for Climate Change and Energy Technology Innovation at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. This Center was established in 2010 as a flagship project of the collaboration between Tsinghua University and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro where there are offices of both countries within both universities. It has become an important platform for educational, scientific and cultural exchanges between the two countries in the field of clean energy and climate change.

The relevant persons in charge of the Office of International Affairs participated in the visit. Representatives at the School of Architecture, the Department of Chemical Engineering, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Public Policy & Management, the School of Law, the Latin America Center, the Institute for AI International Governance, and the Education Foundation participated several activities.
