Professor Zhang Qiang from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University was recently honored with the inaugural Young Scientist SDGs Award. The award was announced at the 2023 World Young Scientist Summit (WYSS) in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, last month.

This award recognizes young scientists who have made innovative contributions to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Zhang was selected from 80 nominees across 35 countries and regions for his groundbreaking work in lithium bond chemistry and electrochemical energy storage, contributing significantly to the development and application of advanced energy materials. His research supports clean, safe, and cost-effective energy solutions, promoting sustainable development at both global and local scales. Three young talents from around the world, including Zhang, were awarded.

The Young Scientist SDGs Award, aligned with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals, covers seven areas: Zero Hunger, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Climate Action, Life Below Water and Life on Land.

Initiated this year, the award is to be annually conferred by a select scientific committee and judging committee during the WYSS, and aims to spotlight young scientists for their innovative efforts towards a sustainable future.
