2022 Tsinghua-TUM Talks on Carbon Neutrality held

The 2022 Tsinghua-TUM Talks were held on November 25. The event was co-organized by Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS) and the Beijing Liaison Office of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), with the theme of talent training and scientific research in the field of carbon neutrality.

Jiang Peixue, vice president of Tsinghua University and dean of Tsinghua SIGS, Juliane Winkelmann, senior vice president of TUM, and Gao Hong, executive dean of Tsinghua SIGS, attended the event.

In his speech, Jiang Peixue spoke about the cooperation between Tsinghua University and the Technical University of Munich since the signing of the flagship partnership agreement in 2020. He also highlighted the importance of carbon neutrality and Tsinghua’s emphasis on climate change and sustainable development. He expressed his hope to continue working with global partners like TUM to support important goals related to the fate of mankind like carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

In her welcoming remarks, Juliane Winkelmann emphasized the commitment of TUM and Tsinghua University to educate and train the next generation of world-class scientists and innovative and entrepreneurial talents, their active promotion of innovation and sustainable development to face global challenges such as climate change, and the close ties between the two institutions. “Today’s event will showcase how Tsinghua and TUM experts work on new technologies and innovations for a carbon-neutral society, but also how Tsinghua and TUM, as the leading technical universities in China and Germany, try to promote sustainability and carbon neutrality more broadly on campus,” Winkelmann said.

During the keynote speech session, speakers Kang Feiyu and Zuo Jian’e, associate deans of Tsinghua SIGS, Jakob Burger, director of Chemical Process Engineering at TUM, and Thomas Brück, head of Werner Siemens-Chair Synthetic Biotechnology at TUM, shared their views on advanced biofuels, innovation in technology and education of new energy storage, bioeconomy, and engineering education on carbon neutrality from Tsinghua University in Beijing and Shenzhen.

Panel discussion

Following the keynote speeches, during the panel discussion, Zhang Yi, assistant professor of the Tsinghua SIGS Institute of Future Human Habitats, Hong Chaopeng, assistant professor of the Tsinghua SIGS Institute of Environment and Ecology, Shen Xinwei, assistant professor of the Tsinghua SIGS Institute for Ocean Engineering, and Li Xuebing, an alumnus of both Tsinghua University and TUM and leader of the Heterogeneous Catalytic Conversion Group at Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, compared the carbon neutrality policies of China and Germany and shared their thoughts on talent training in the field.

Background

Tsinghua-TUM Talks is a new platform for exchange first piloted in 2020 in the context of the flagship partnership between Tsinghua University and the Technical University of Munich. This series of events helps to connect topics of discussion on campus with interested audiences through the global networks of both universities. In the future, the two institutions will continue to expand the influence of the event and share more joint events with the global community.
