Cross-disciplinary team of Tsinghua wins Red Dot Award

Recently, Tsinghua University’s cross-disciplinary team won the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2022 with the work “Thermal Responsive Fashion Design”.

The work was also invited to be exhibited at Dutch Design Week, one of the largest design events in Europe. It is noted for its fashion, innovation and experimental designs covering industrial, conceptual, graphic and costume creations.

The cross-disciplinary team is led by Song Jiajia, a doctoral student from the Department of Industrial design of the Academy of Arts & Design, and He Shuang, a doctoral student from the Department of Textile & Fashion Design. Also in the team are Lin Tengyu and Liao Qihua, doctoral students of Professor Qu Liangti’s team at the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

By integrating design, material, technique and manufacturing methods, in the future, the “thermal responsive fashion design” can self-adjust to the ambient temperature with its smart thermal inks, thus fulfilling the automatic temperature control of the garment without the need to add or remove clothes.

The team insisted on the design idea of combining sustainability and intelligence.

The “thermal responsive fashion design” explores the possibility of self-controlled temperature of outdoor clothing to achieve intelligent clothing design, functional colors, and ultimately sustainable fashion.
