讲座内容简介:

In my new interdisciplinary research project, I am exploring the mental experience of poetry. This requires several preliminary methodological concerns. First, I am taking into account the overly wide (and possibly universal) distribution of poetry among human civilizations and languages, making a plea for "more than global" approaches of fundamental literary phenomena. Then, if we seek to understand how poems are created in the mind of their authors and readers, we need to open some kind of dialogue between literary theory, philosophy and cognitive science. From such viewpoint, the current project inherits from the more general argument I am advancing in my 2015 book The Intellective Space. Finally, the constant reference to singular (and "close") readings is mandatory, for poetic thinking is also performed ad hoc.

The lecture I am giving at the Institute will present some of those epistemic challenges. But I will mainly introduce a "research programme" that provides a tentative definition (or, rather, qualification) of poetry, as it exists in our brains and minds. We should additionally discuss the issue of poetic regulations, and I would introduce a synthetic table of the basic features that rule poetic production, supposedly in all languages. This might even lead us to formulating a set of hypotheses about the emergence of poetry in (pre)historic times. The interpretation of specific texts will mainly happen in the mini-seminar I am concurrently teaching this week at Tsinghua, through a focus on semantics, performance, and imagery.
