The department has focused its research on the frontiers of both basic theoretical studies of philosophy and applied philosophy, with priority in the sub-fields of applied ethics and Western classical philosophy. Since the rebuilding in 2000, the faculty members have undertaken (or presided over) many projects from the National Fund of Philosophy and Social Sciences, the Fund of the Ministry of Humanities and Social Sciences, funds from other ministries of the government and funds of provincial governments, as well as funds from international agencies. The faculty members have been undertaking one major project, twelve projects (including two priority projects) from the National Fund of Philosophy and Social Sciences, three projects from the National Fund of Natural Sciences, fourteen projects from the Beijing municipal government and the ministries of the government, twelve projects from Tsinghua University, eighteen projects from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and more than ten projects from international or overseas agencies. To encourage academic studies and accumulate academic works since the rebuilding, the department has published three series of books named the “3+1 academic project” (the Series of Tsinghua Philosophical Studies, the Series of Tsinghua Philosophical Textbooks, the Series of Tsinghua Philosophical Works of Translation, and the Tsinghua Philosophical Almanac). Up to now, the Series of Tsinghua Philosophical Studies has published sixteen academic works or collections of papers, the Series of Philosophical Textbooks has published six works in various areas of philosophy, the Series of Tsinghua Philosophical Works of Translation has published eight works, and Tsinghua Philosophical Almanac has published eight works consecutively (from 2000 to 2007).
