A seminar on the academic thought of renowned Professor Yang Chen Ning, entitled "Celebratory conference for Yang Chen Ning at One Hundred,” was held at Tsinghua University on September 22.
Professor Yang Chen Ning is a Nobel Laureate in physics, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and honorary director of the Tsinghua University Institute for Advanced Study.
Chen Xu, chairperson of the Council of Tsinghua University, presided over the gathering organized to celebrate his 100th birthday.
She said that Professor Yang, a renowned physicist and Nobel laureate, has made significant contributions to modern theoretical physics, and noted that he has had a deep love for the country and has closely followed the cause of Chinese science and technology, contributing a great deal to its scientific and technological development and exchanges between China and other countries in the sectors of science, technology and culture over several decades.
Chen added that Professor Yang has maintained close ties with Tsinghua University and always cared for, supported and devoted himself to its development as he pursued his academic career there.
Tsinghua University President Qiu Yong conveyed full respect and extended best wishes on behalf of Tsinghua University to Professor Yang on the occasion of his 100th birthday. He said that Professor Yang, the first Chinese Nobel Laureate, had played an important role in the establishment of the Tsinghua University Institute for Advanced Study and assumed the title of its honorary head, which demonstrated his intense love for the country.
Qiu emphasized that Professor Yang is a great master and has a special place in the hearts of all Chinese people.
Chen Zhili, former Chinese state councilor and vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People’s Congress, spoke highly of Professor Yang’s remarkable contributions and said that the reasons people admire him are because he is the greatest living physicist in the world, has earned the highest honor in the global scientific field, has always followed the development of China while living overseas for many years, has demonstrated a forward-looking and strategic mind and a practical spirit of science, and has remained devoted wholeheartedly to the cultivation and attraction of talents for the country.
Zhang Jie, president of the Chinese Physical Society (CPS), reviewed the history of interaction between the CPS and Professor Yang and between Professor Yang and himself over the past decades. He said that Professor Yang has always followed the development of Chinese physics, proactively organized and promoted the CPS to take part in exchanges and cooperation with its foreign counterparts, and made glorious contributions to the development of Chinese physics.
Rocky S. Tuan, president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), sent his best wishes to Professor Yang for his 100th birthday on behalf of the CUHK.
Gu Binglin, former president of Tsinghua University and director of the Tsinghua University Institute for Advanced Study, said in his speech that the world of Professor Yang is a world of science and a world of interaction between China and the West. He has made a perfect combination between the roots of Chinese culture and the spirit of science in the West. He belongs to both China and the entire world. He has made noticeable contributions to getting China better known by more people from other countries and better integrating China with the world.
Thanks to the support of Professor Yang, Tsinghua University founded the Institute for Advanced Study in the 1990s. He has taken the lead in attracting leading research figures, the cultivation of young talents, the production of numerous major research results, and the promotion of high-level international academic exchanges.
Professor Yang donated a large number of valuable documents and research materials, which fully reflect his academic thought and personal wisdom, to Tsinghua University to set up a special room of research materials under his name when the University celebrated its 110th founding anniversary this April.
