Brief Introduction to Educational Poverty Alleviation Project of Tsinghua University
The Educational Poverty Alleviation Program was initiated by Tsinghua University in 2003 with the philosophy of education serves the society and it is a public project aimed at benefiting China’s poverty-stricken areas. The project is to set up Tsinghua University Educational Poverty Alleviation Modern Distance Learning Station using modern distance education technology in some of the key counties of national poverty alleviation and development work. Our goal is to provide to the teachers and students in the primary and secondary schools, administration staff and farmers in the less-developed areas with the high quality educational resources to meet their demand. Tsinghua University has set up Educational Poverty Alleviation Leading Office responsible for giving guidance to the educational poverty alleviation work. And Tsinghua University also set up Educational Poverty Alleviation Office for the implementation of the educational poverty alleviation work.
Up till September, 2011, Tsinghua University has established educational poverty alleviation modern distance learning stations in 997 counties, provided training to more than 1,040,000 person/times accumulatively, provided more than 3,000 hours of training courses (including both distance and face to face) free of charge each year. The training included training for the administration staff, the teachers and students in the primary and secondary schools and the professional skills for the farmers.
Introduction to Summer Service Learning Program (SSLP) in Rural China
The people in the less-developed areas, like administration staff, teachers and students seeing the high-quality educational resources from developed areas all wish to have an opportunity to exchange with those from developed areas. In order to satisfy their desire, since 2006 Educational Poverty Alleviation Office, the Committee of Youth League and the Teachers Union of Tsinghua University have organized Summer Service Learning Program in Rural China six times in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. 356 teachers and students from the United States, 1280 students and 192 teachers from Tsinghua University and 214 counties where the educational poverty alleviation modern distance learning stations located participated the Program.
Teachers and students from both the Unites States and China went to the local sites and brought to the teachers and students in the primary and secondary schools with English training, computer training, social survey, lectures on special topic and culture exchange, etc. They brought to them with modern information and confidence, and opened a window for them to know the outside of the world.

Some information about 2012 Summer Service Learning Program in Rural China SSLP
The 2012 Summer Service Learning Program in Rural China will be carried out from July 11 to July 31, 2012. Tsinghua University will organize 250 teachers and students from both America and China to the rural areas in China. Each team will be of 1 teacher and 5 students from Tsinghua University and 2 or 3 students or teachers from America. The program activities include orientation, teaching at the local learning stations, social survey and sum up of the activities. (see annex1)

Applicant should provide:

3.Two recommendation letters from professors and signed copy of Liability Waiver Agreement (see annex 3)

Registration Fee: Each participant pays registration fee: US$ 490
International fare will be paid by the participants
Tsinghua University will pay for the accommodation and give ¥15.00 per day for the meal.
Tsinghua University will pay for the transportation to and from the local site, and ¥30.00 per day for the accommodation and meal.
Tsinghua University will buy the accidental insurance for all the participants during the Program.
