With the maturing of the national strategy of science and technology development, China has established both national major projects that focus on national strategic goals, and national science and technology programs that, with stable support of state revenue, aim to support development of technological products for the general public. These programs include the National Program of Support for Science and Technology, the 863 Program, the 973 Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the National Major Projects of Science and Technology, and the ministerial programs and projects of Beijing.
The scientific and technological research and projects at Tsinghua University are mainly supported by special projects and by funding from the national science and technology programs. Together funding from these programs totals over 2000 million yuan, covering more than 1400 projects, every year for the university. With the prospective increase of state investment in science and technology, research at Tsinghua is set to receive even more financial support from the state.
