“To work healthily for 50 years for our beloved motherland”, this has been the slogan for 60 years. It has remained a common goal and spirit of the Tsinghua people. It has inspired and challenged them to continue making contributions to the motherland and most importantly: to make further advancements.
On December 10th, the 60th Anniversary of the slogan “to work healthily for 50 years for our beloved motherland” was held at Tsinghua’s main auditorium. During the day, Tsinghua’s President Qiu Yong read out the approval letter from Liu Yandong, the Vice Premier of the State Council. Liu pointed out that Tsinghua has adhered to “maintaining the highest level of education, physical education is as important as positive character.” Tsinghua has, trained large number of top-quality talents for both the party and the motherland. For the past 60 years, the slogan “To work healthily for 50 years for our beloved motherland”, first stressed by President Jiang Nanxiang has inspired generations after generations of Tsinghua students as well as generated a wide range of social influences. “We hope that you will continue to study hard and apply new ideas as stated by President Xi Jinping into your work. We hope that you will continue to adhere to the traditions of sports and deepen reforms in education. A new chapter will commence in the teaching and development of China’s higher education sector and you will no doubt be an important part of this!”
Tsinghua alumni, Olympic Champion Deng Yaping, Xiao Qin and masters of sports Peng Tiequan, Hu Fanggang made a special trip back to their Alma mater. With an average age of 74 years-old, Tsinghua’s Shanghai Alumni Choir, moved the hearts of many viewers. Alongside leaders from the Ministry of Education, National Sports Bureau, Beijing Municipal Party Committee, Chinese University Students’ Sports Association as well as the current and former Heads of Tsinghua and hundreds of staff and students, they recalled and carried forward the sports spirit of Tsinghua University.
“Health is the foundation of success”- this has been the experience of 90 year-old Huang Kezhi. After graduating from university at the age of 20 years old, he has always remained at the forefront of teaching and research for 70 years. He started running at the age of 40 and learnt how to swim at the age of 70. At the age of 72, he kept his daily habit of playing tennis for at least 40 minutes per day. “Hard work and health have kept me from wasting my life,” said Huang. He has set the best example for Tsinghua teachers and students to follow.
Tsinghua University has always attached great importance to sports since its founding in 1911. It has made sports an important school tradition and a part of the curriculum. This has remained a top characteristic of Tsinghua. 60 years ago, on the 29th of November 1957, President Jiang Nanxiang put forward a slogan “To work healthily for 50 years for our beloved motherland” at the Tsinghua Sports Cadre Conference. This popular slogan has since become the goal of every Tsinghua person. For decades, the slogan has had a positive and broad impact on Tsinghua as well as the whole society.
