Tsinghua University confers and Honorary Professorship on Randall R. Rader, former Chief Judge of The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

On December 6, 2016, Tsinghua University held a ceremony to confer  an Honorary Professorship on Randall R. Rader, former Chief Judge of The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The ceremony was held in the reception hall of Tsinghua University’s main building. Afterwards, Prof. Rader gave the Tsinghua Global Vision Lecture.

Prof. Shi Yigong, Vice President of Tsinghua University, held a meeting with Prof Rader prior to the conferment ceremony. Prof. Rader described his wonderful teaching experience at Tsinghua, and praised the high quality of Tsinghua’s students. Prof. Shi and Prof. Rader also discussed issues of intellectual property between China and America. Prof. Rader left the following message in the guestbook: “I hope Tsinghua University continues to lead the higher education of China to an unprecedented point.”

Prof. Shen Weixing, Dean of the Tsinghua Law School, hosted the conferment ceremony. Prof. Shi Yigong presented the certificate to Prof. Rader, and made a speech. He expressed appreciation for Prof. Rader’s important contribution to the legal education of Tsinghua University, and praised Prof. Rader’s outstanding achievements in law. Prof. Shi also discussed the development of Tsinghua University’s legal curriculum, anticipating further collaboration in the cultivation of legal talent and development of intellectual property law at Tsinghua University.

Prof. Rader expressed his great honor at being presented with an Honorary Professorship by Tsinghua University. “I can justifiably be called prof. Rader this time,” he remarked humorously. He encouraged present Tsinghua students to cherish the opportunity to study at Tsinghua, one of the best universities in the world, and strive to be the leaders in the future.

After the ceremony, Prof. Rader delivered 206th Tsinghua Global Vision Lecture, entitled “the Rule of Law and Innovation.” Prof. Cui Guobin, Vice Dean of the Tsinghua Law School, hosted the lecture. Prof. Rader spoke about how every individual’s personal choices impact beyond their own lives, and contribute to the greater project of civilization. This process of development is protected by law, and results in innovation.
