The idea of the Asia-Pacific Simulated Company Merger Competition was conceived by the Taiwan University of Politics Law School and Business School, which then started an Asia-Pacific competition in Chinese context with Tsinghua Law School and Renmin University of China Law School. The competition aims to create a comprehensive platform with legal, economic, financial, and management knowledge. Different representative teams imitated the merger side and the opposing side in the competition, and the teams complete a professional survey, scheme a merger plan, discuss merger intention to ensure a merger plan, and exchange it in a fixed time. Then the teams are requested to complete a board of directors’ report and engage in commercial merger negotiation to simulate and reproduce the practical enterprise merger business, promoting negotiation and collaboration and building new thinking among the participants.

At previous competitions Tsinghua Law School’s team has achieved impressive results. In 2011, Tsinghua Law School placed second at the inaugural Cross-strait Universities Company Merger Simulated Competition and was runner-up the following year at the second competition. In 2014, Tsinghua Law School won the Best Merger Team Prize and was named runner up as the Best Merger Adviser Team at the 4th Asia Pacific Region Simulated Company Merger Competition.

At this 5th Asia Pacific Region Simulated Company Merger Competition there were more than 12 law schools of universities competing, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Renmin University of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nanjing University, Xiamen University, National Taiwan University, Taiwan University of Politics, Taipai University, Hong Kong University, National University of Singapore, and Singapore Management University.

Since the competition’s inception, it has attracted focus from the academic, legal practice, and enterprise fields in the cross-strait areas as an opportunity for students to hone commercial analysis capabilities and real-world legal application skills. In 2016, the sixth company merger simulated competition will reportedly be held at Taipei University in Taiwan.
