Tsinghua Hosts 14th Int’l 21st Century Commercial Law Forum

From October 25-26, 2014, the Tsinghua University Commercial Law Research Center hosted the 21st Century Commercial Law Forum in the Mingli Building of Tsinghua Law School. The theme topic of this international symposium was the Re-examination of the Corporation Capital System. Scholars from China and around the globe submitted 43 conference papers. During the one and a half day’s agenda, 37 scholars made keynote reports and 12 scholars made appraisals of the many issues presented. The speeches and discussions were mainly focused on the theoretical evaluation of capital system reform of China’s Company Law in 2013, basic theory of the corporation capital system, reform of the corporation capital system and creditor protection, and the latest development of corporation capital system in foreign states and regions. The various points of view produced an engaging discussion.

 

The Shenzhen Liyueyun Information Management Limited Company and Sichuan Jiannanchun (Group) Limited Company supported the 21st Century Commercial Law Forum. 2014 was the 14th international symposium, gathering approximately 100 renowned commercial law scholars and practitioners from different countries and territories including America, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan as well as prestigious Mainland China institutions such as the Supreme People’s Court, Chinese Academy of Social Science Institute of Law, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, China University of Political Science and Law, Jilin University, Southwest University of Political Science and Law, East China University of Political Science and Law, and the Beijing Economic Law Society as well as top Chinese law firms.

 

Professor Zhu Ciyun, Director of the Tsinghua University Commercial Law Research Center, presided over the opening ceremony. Tsinghua University Vice Headmaster Yang Bin, Tsinghua Law School Dean Wang Zhenmin, Second Civil Trial Court Presiding Judge Zhang Yongjian of the Supreme People’s Court, Dr. Zhou Chenli of Shenzhen Liyueyun Information Management Limited Company, Honorary Director and Professor Wang Baoshu of Tsinghua University Commercial Law Research Center, Professor Gao Xiqing of Tsinghua Law School, and Vice Dean and Professor William Wilson Bratton of University of Pennsylvania School of Law attended the opening ceremony and presented speeches. At the opening ceremony, the official website of the Tsinghua University Commercial Law Research Center: 21st Century Commercial Law Forum (http://www.21cclf.com) was announced to the scholars and practitioners in attendance.

The closing ceremony of the conference was presided over by Tsinghua Law Associate Professor Tang Xin, Deputy Director of the Tsinghua University Commercial Law Research Center. Professor Lai Yuanhe, one of Taiwan’s most renowned commercial law jurists, spoke at the closing ceremony. He emphasized that the corporation capital system was a fundamental system in company law and had a butterfly effect, further commenting that under the background of the 2013 reform of China’s Company Law, it was quite necessary to fully review and inspect the company system. Professor Lai said that during the symposium, the discussions of the scholars were comprehensive, profound, novel, unique, and greatly contributed to the success of the conference. Professor Zhu Ciyun, Director of the Tsinghua University Commercial Law Research Center presented closing remarks. On behalf of Tsinghua University Commercial Law Research Center, she expressed her gratitude to the participating experts and scholars for their contributions and warmly invited them to return to the Tsinghua Law School campus next Autumn.

The inaugural 21st Century Commercial Law Forum was held in 2001 and since then there have been 14 annual conferences. The forum invites renowned experts, scholars, and practitioners from China and worldwide to conduct academic discussions on a wide range of topics including protection of investor interests, reform of the Company Law in light of the global economic competition system, company acquisitions, modernization of the Company Law during transition periods, latest developments of commercial law in China and the US, financial mechanisms dealing with the financial crisis, prospects of structural reform of company legal system, company autonomy and government regulation. The 21st Century Commercial Law Forum has become an important and influential symposium for Chinese commercial law scholars and practitioners around the globe.
