Tsinghua Teamwon the championship in the 14th CIETAC Cup International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition

From November 21st to 25th, the 14th CIETAC Cup International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition (hereinafter referred to asthe “CIETAC Cup”) was held in Beijing CCOIC building. After intense runs of competitions, Tsinghua Team finally won the championship. Deng Bingxun, a current sophomore student in Tsinghua Law School, also won the title of “the Best Debater”.

The CIETAC Cup is a professional arbitration law annual event hosted by Chinese International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission with participants from nationwide law schools in China. The official language of the CIETAC Cup is English. Law practitioners, such as senior arbitrators and famous lawyers from domestic and foreign regions, wouldco-form tribunalsthat preside in the moot competition. Participating students served correspondingly as claimants and respondents of one arbitration case and participate in the trials of the arbitration court. The parties would present their requests for remedies, as well as supporting arguments, meanwhile respond to numerous questions asked by the tribunals during the hearing. The CIETAC Cup has proved to be of great value in enhancing students’ level and ability of legal practice in the field of international commercial law.

The CIETAC Cup 2016 has attracted over 400 participants from 46 teams in China, with nearly 100 international and domestic arbitrators, lawyers and experts from more than 10 countries and regions acting as judges. The scale of the moot sets a new record in its own history.

Mr. David Branson is the director for Tsinghua Team. Tsinghua Team consists of seven members in total: Zhao Leran (freshman), Zhang Xinyi(first-year postgraduate), Zhou Feng (freshman), Dai Xinyue(junior), Deng Bingxue(sophomore), Zhang Yindi(junior )and Xu Hanbing(junior).Picture of participants from the University of International Business and Economics in the Final Round

This is the second time Tsinghua Team has won the championship after 13 years, which fully proves that Tsinghua law school’s great achievements in educating high-level international commercial lawyers.
