The 6th World Tribology Congress opened in Beijing

The 6th World Tribology Congress opened at the Beijing International Convention Center on the morning of September 18th, to which Vice Premier Liu Yandong specially addressed a letter of congratulations. More than 2,000 Chinese and foreign tribology researchers gathered in Beijing, discussing the sustainable development of world friction science, engineering and technology. This congress was held in China for the first time in 20 years since the establishment of the World Tribology Congress, organized by the Chinese Tribology Institute (CTI), Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society Tribology, and hosted by Tsinghua University.

In the congratulatory letter, Liu Yandong extended warm congratulations to the openning of the congress, and a sincere welcome to experts and scholars from all over the world. Liu Yandong pointed out that as an interdiscipline, tribology research refers to a wide range of fields, and plays an important role in energy conservation, consumption reduction, environmental protection, and acceleration of science and technology development. The Chinese government has always been adhering to the concept of sustainable development, building up a conservation-binding society, paying high attention to scientific research and industry development in tribology related fields. We are willing to join hands and cooperate with countries in the world. Making unremitting efforts to propel the development of tribology.

Liu Yandong said that the World Tribology Congress is a comprehensively grand meeting, with the largest scale and highest level in the international field of tribology. It held in China for the first time, constructing an effective platform for international tribology co-communication. It also provides a significant window for exhibiting the technology and industry development accomplishment in Chinese tribology field. She sincerely hoped that all the participants make good use of this opportunity to communicate deeply, get inspired, and collaborate side by side, so as to make contribution to the tribology co-development in the world as well as improvement of human welfare.

On the opening ceremony, Vice President of the Chinese Tribology Institute and Director-General Gu Kaili read the congratulatory message of Vice Premier Liu Yandong. Chen Xu, party secretary, director of the school administration committee of Tsinghua University, Academician Yang Wei, director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Academician Luo Jianbin, chairman of the congress and president of School of Mechanical Engineering, Tsinghua University, and Professor Ali Erdemir of Argonne Nation Laboratory, Unite States, new chairman of International Tribology Council (ITC) delivered a speech respectively.

Chen Xu briefly introduced the basic situation of Tsinghua University in her speech. She pointed out that after more than 50 years of development, tribology has formed a developed theoretical framework and complete industrial chain. A number of outstanding Chinese and foreign scholars emerged, contributing to the progress of human science progress. State Key Laboratory of Tribology, Tsinghua University, made a positive contribution to the development of tribology, and played a supporting role in the construction of related disciplines. Chen Xu said that on this International Tribology Congress, tribology experts from around the world gather together colliding ideas, being a scientific feast in the field of tribology. She wished the congress a great success.

Yang Wei expressed his sincere congratulations on China holding the World Tribology Congress for the first time. He said that tribology research is related to the development of economy society. In recent years, the National Natural Science Foundation has supported many teams, including Tsinghua University, turning out to be very fruitful. The foundation will further support the development of Chinese tribology, promote cross-disciplinary research, promote international cooperation and innovation in the future, making tribology play an even better role in China's modernization and world science and technology development.

Academician Luo Jianbin said that making fire from drilling wood led human towards civilization. Replacing sliding friction with rolling friction on wheels and the invention of bearings which is closely related to tribology promoted the development of modern industry. Today, from aerospace to transportation and bridge engineering, to the deep diving in oceans and deep exploration of the earth, almost all mega projects relies on the contribution of tribology. The congress will focus on energy-and-green-related tribology development needs, concerning on new-born areas, and strive to create a more efficient, safe and green earth home.

The new Chairman, Professor Ali Erdemir, introduced the development situation and future vision of the International Tribology Council. He expressed gratitude to the dedicated contribution of every tribology researcher and the elaborate preparations of Tsinghua University. "We are meeting Beijing, promoting exchanges, accelerating innovation and working together building a global home. I believe that the outcome of the five-day congress will have a continuing impact on the development of the discipline and industries over the next few years" he said.

After the opening ceremony, Academician Liu Weimin of Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Jacob Klein of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, performed special reports respectively, titled "Space Science Friction" and "Biology Lubrication". Afterwards, Professor Ali Erdimir, Professor Meng Yonggang of Tsinghua University and four other tribology experts performed reports on aspects of coatings, multi-physical interface, tribology and environmental protection, etc.

The congress is held for five days, aiming to highlight recent important progress in all aspects of tribology, explore the future researching orientation of tribology, and strengthen the links between academia and industry.

There are 2022 tribology researchers registered participants, from institutions of higher learning, research facilities and enterprises of China, the United States, Japan, Britain, Germany, France and other countries. The congress received a total of 1398 contributions. Nine themed venues are set regarding to different aspects of Friction and surface engineering, lubrication and lubricants, biological and bionic tribology, industrial tribology, engine and transmission tribology, industrial friction systems, friction detection and monitoring, and the Youth Tribology Forum. Through key reports, lectures, seminars and other forms, the congress performs academic seminars and exchanges on new ideas, new theories, new methods and new applications of tribology.

During the meeting, the "Science and Technology Exhibition of Friction Science" is held. A total of 38 Chinese and foreign organizations, including Tsinghua University Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Thermal Engineering, are invited, attracting the collective visit of students from the High School Attached to Tsinghua University.

Prof. Ge Shirong, chairman of Chinese Tribology Institute, President of China University of Mining and Technology, Prof. Liu Weimin, member of the Standing Committee of Chinese Tribology Institute and Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, served as co-chair of the conference. The co-organizers includes the follows: National Natural Science Foundation of China, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China University of Mining and Technology, Southwest Jiaotong University, Henan University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan Institute of Materials Protection, Henan University, Hefei University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Shanghai University, Fuzhou University, China University of Petroleum (Beijing), Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Tribology is a science that studies friction, wear and lubrication, playing a central role in mechanical engineering, energy, and electronics. Studies have found that about 30% of world's annual energy consumption was consumed due to friction, about 60% of machine parts became failure due to friction and failure and about 50% of the mechanical equipment vicious accidents was from lubrication failure and excessive wear. With the continuous improvement of tribology, a more efficient, safer, greener earth home is being created.

The World Tribology Congress (WTC) started from 1997, and is held every four years. The first five congresses were held in Britain (London), Austria (Vienna), the United States (Washington), Japan (Kyoto) and Italy (Turin). China stood out from the competition with the United States, Sweden, South Africa and other countries, won the right to host the congress, thanks to the rapid development of its scientific and technological strength in recent years. Since 2013, in the field of tribology, the number of Chinese tribology science citation index (SCI) papers has exceeded the United States, ranking first in the world, which is more than twice of the third one. China has reached world-class in various fields of tribology, such as superlubricity, severe conditions, tribology, biological and bionic tribology, etc.

Tsinghua University is leading in the world in tribology research, enjoying a high international reputation. The State Key Laboratory of Tribology (SKLT), Tsinghua University was established in 1986. Accredited by the the state and open to public in November 1988, it was one of the earliest State Key Laboratories in Tsinghua University, as well as in the field of mechanical engineering in China. In the past 10 years of state key engineering laboratories evaluation, it kept to be the first place. In recent years, the laboratory has achieved a series of important accomplishment in chemical mechanical polishing for integrated circuit manufacturing and superlubricity.
