TUEF Overview

As a famous institution of higher learning, Tsinghua University has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents within nearly a century, who have been making contributions to the construction and development of the country. The year 2011 will witness the 100th anniversary of Tsinghua University. It is a common aspiration for the whole faculty and all the students of Tsinghua to construct a world-class university and start a new epoch.

In recent years, the government’s input into universities and colleges has been on the increase. Therefore, the basic conditions for the construction are improving day by day; however, the contradiction between insufficient funds and the improvement of strength in school-running is still very prominent. It has become an inevitable trend to raise funds for school-running through multiple channels. For a long time, domestic and overseas enterprises as well as our alumni have been making generous donations to the university and giving their support to education and research, talent introduction and international exchange, infrastructure construction on campus, students’ scientific, recreational and sports activities, scholarships and grants, etc., making remarkable contributions to realize the strategic target of building the university into one of the best universities in the world as soon as possible.  By the end of 2009, the Foundation had received more than 2 billion yuan in donations from society, and the total expenditure on projects was over 1.2 billion yuan. The Foundation has patronized more than a hundred scholarship and grant programs, totaling tens of millions yuan, to encourage and provide financial aid to Tsinghua students to finish their studies and for their all-round development. As a result, the students have not only obtained material assistance, but also made up their minds to repay the society in the future. The Foundation has successively constructed more than 30 new buildings, and added or updated equipment for teaching or research, providing indispensable material conditions for the construction and development of disciplines and for the teaching and research to keep abreast with advanced standards. As a result, the conditions for work and study have been remarkably improved. A “Talent Fund” has been established, dedicated to the introduction of and support to world-class faculty lineup. Tens of world-renowned professors, scholars and experts have been to the university as guest professors, and tens of high-level talents have come to teach permanently, accelerating the development of related disciplines towards world levels. Several research funds aimed at world academic frontiers have been set up, and a number of advanced research achievements have come out one after another. At the same time, the Foundation has been adopting a steady approach in its management of assets and has maintained a stable growth of proceeds while ensuring the safety of the principal of the funds as a basis. We can say that the Foundation has accumulated the profound hope and love of various circles of the society for Tsinghua University and is trying with everyone to do its share in the construction of Tsinghua University into a world-class university, which has been a grand strategy for us all.

 As the first foundation for university education established in China, and with 15 years of exploration since its establishment in 1994, Tsinghua University Education Foundation has been continuously improving in fund raising, project management, asset management and lineup construction, etc. It is ranked among the top university foundations in mainland China and has become a directorial member of the University Foundation Forum of China under the Chinese Association of Higher Education, playing an active role in promoting the steady development of the University Foundation Forum. In March of 2008, it was rated by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People’s Republic of China as a “4A social organization”, which is the highest certification of non-public foundations by the state.
