Professor Liu was born in 1942 and received his first degree from Liaoning Normal University in 1964. After years of experiences as senior officers in local radio and television authorities and journalists, he returned to Renmin University to complete his MA and PhD. He was then appointed head of the journalism department of Chinese Institute of International Relations. Professor Liu joined Tsinghua in mid-1990s and was deputy head of the Chinese department until the Communications department was established in 1998 when he became a chair professor of journalism and public opinion studies. Professor Liu is a member of the senior advisor board of the journalism education of the Ministry of Education, former member of the Beijing Municipal Senate, and qualified to receive stipend from the State Council for his excellent work. He is also visiting professors at eight leading universities including Renmin University, Fudan University, Beijing Broadcasting Institute, Wuhan University, and Chinese University of Agriculture and etc. Professor Liu is well known as the founder of public opinion studies in China and he has a very large publications record with more than 20 books, including: Public Opinion and Communications; Macro Journalism Studies and he is also the chief editor for the dictionary of Propaganda and Public Opinion, and Dictionary of Theory and Skills for Applied Writing.
