The 4S Program Chair Prof. Roli Varma gave a talk on the "Asian Immigrants in the US S&T Workforce"

Prof. Roli Varma from the School of Public Administration University of New Mexico, as well as the Program Chair, Annual Meeting of 4S (Society for Social Studies of Science), 2011 & 2013 visited our institute on Nov. 7, and gave a talk on the “Asian Immigrants in the US Science & Technology Workforce: A Warmer Future for A Cold Climate”. Dr. Chadwick WANG hosted this event, while faculties and students from both Tsinghua and other universities came to attend.

In the lecture, Prof. Varma demonstrated the myth in arguments against immigrants by showing contributions of Indian & Chinese (IC) immigrant scientists and engineers to the U.S. economy, as well as challenged the theory of “Model Immigrants” which has been put forth for Asian immigrants by bringing forwards the Theories of Asian Entrepreneurialism. Prof. Varma argued, the IC (Indian & China) immigrant scientists/engineers have adopted the goals of establishing their own high-tech companies. Beyond, they have become entrepreneurs by transforming their inventions into innovation, they have defied the traditional capital accumulation process.
